The atmosphere was a mix of hot gases and solids. To an extent you could say there was no atmosphere. It was comprised of hydrogen, sulfide, methane, and considerably more carbon dioxide the we have in our atmosphere today.

Finally, oxygen entered the earth's atmosphere. This was due to tiny photosynthetic organisms that photosynthesized and released oxygen into the atmosphere. This is also when the Ozone layer formed, which protects the earth from the sun's radiation.

Plants were able to begin growing, and because of this even more oxygen was released into the atmosphere! At this point, oxygen made up about 20% of the earth's atmosphere. As the carbon dioxide amount decreased, the earth became cooler.

For the majority of this time period, the earth was warmer than it is now. However, it slowly cooled down. Now the atmosphere is as we see it today. Although the atmosphere is at a state in which it is inhabitable for humans, we are adding more and more methane to the atmosphere, tearing holes in the Ozone layer. If we don't take care of this, we may no longer have a habitable earth.
