Charanga Music Scheme

Here at Woodlesford Primary school we use the Charanga Musical School. This is a scheme that provides weekly lesson support for teachers, ensuring a clear progression though engaging and exciting lessons. In line with the music curriculum and with guidance from Ofsted, the scheme uses a practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning. The interrelated dimensions of music (pulse, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, timbre, structure, texture and notation) weave through each unit of lessons, to encourage the development of musical skills. The work is divided into half termly units which enable children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based approach to learning. Learning about the same musical concept through different musical activities enables a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills. Musical teaching and learning is not neat or linear. Over time, children can both develop new musical skills and concepts, and re-visit established musical skills and concepts. Repeating a musical skill doesn’t necessarily mean their progress is slowing down or their development is moving backwards! It's just shifting within the spiral.

At Woodlesford Primary School children will gain a good understanding about different music genres and their features, what differentiates and unites them. They will have enjoyed developing their understanding about how music is structured and about the various instrument types and their features. Thus, they will be equipped to evaluate and discuss the features of the music they encounter using an advancing musical vocabulary. Children will have honed their skills to read and write music, using standard and non standard notation, real and digital instruments. They'll be confident to read music written by others and to create their own. Through routine performances during lessons children will gain the confidence to showcase their skills and abilities to audiences and begin to create a presence for performance.

A range of teaching and learning strategies are used in order to provide a rich and stimulating curriculum for the children. Each lesson involves the use of a tuned musical instrument, usually a glockenspiel, so that children's learning is meaningful and revolves around a central song or tune. Lesson plans are available for teachers along side online audio and visual resources which guide teachers and children through the lessons. The scheme provides teachers with the capacity to assess progress and to make recordings to evidence the children's learning journeys. Opportunities to listen, appraise, learn to read and write music and perform are embedded into each lesson throughout school. In this way, repetition is used to secure knowledge and is extended and built upon week by week and year by year.
