If you have boxes of old unsorted photos, books or diaries in your home, it’s time to make some room. Maybe you have kept every painting or drawing your children did year ago?

Whatever sentimental items you are keeping, you are not alone. It’s always hard letting go of objects with emotional value. So, how can we deal with emotional clutter?

Learning to Let Go

Sometimes it’s tough to let go of sentimental items. Learning to let go of things may take a very long time, especially if they are extra special to you or your family. However, finally giving up on storing these items can be a stepping stone to a new stage in your life. Additionally, you rid yourself of clutter and potentially sad memories.

Box It Up

Even if you are not ready to rid your life of these sentimental items, start boxing things up! Give the boxes labels and stash them away somewhere safe and dry. If you come across obvious junk, chuck out and congratulate yourself.

After some time, if the items in the boxes are missed, you know you want to keep them. If the items have gone unnoticed or forgotten, you know you can get rid of them. If you are in an emotional state and feel you need more time, just wait, you are in no rush.

Get Help

Getting the help of friends and family can aid the decision process when you can’t make them on your own. Often an outside perspective can trigger a decision or feeling and lead to you finally throwing some of these items away. Maybe the idea that these things can make you some extra cash is enough to say goodbye? Often, it’s just good to have another person to have a conversation with; a discussion always leads to the best outcome.

Storage

If you have a house full of items you can simply not sell, give away or chuck in the rubbish, storage is for you. Self-storage sites such as Spacer give you the option of a cheap and local storage alternative to your basement, living room or garage. You can find a storage space that suits your needs at very reasonable prices. This way, you can keep all your sentimental items without having them create clutter and take up space in your home.

Take a Picture

Yes, a digital image does not compare to the actual thing. However, storing an image on a computer is much more convenient and space saving than storing the real thing. Having an image of a painting or drawing your child has done in years’ past is pretty much the equivalent of having the real thing. If one day you need the image, drawing or painting, you can simply have it printed.

Save the Best

This strategy is basic. Keep one to represent many. Some things we are inclined to hang onto in bulk when really, one tiny sample might be more powerful and more convenient. You could be holding onto many items that only hold a little value when there is one essential piece that holds plenty.

A New Home

It’s easier to part with precious objects if you can envision their value being carried on with another person or family. As long as you are considerate when you are handing out items you will feel great about getting rid of them. Knowing they are in the hands of friends and family will give you peace of mind.

Sometimes, some items can’t be handed on, but often you will find the old cliché is true, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. If you can't give your items to friends and family, you can donate them to make somebody else’s life a bit better; you can feel good in the process as well!

Remember, it’s a lot easier to say goodbye to items gradually than purging everything at once. Continually make decisions over time on whether things should stay or go. This will save you from throwing everything away at once and wanting them back.
