If an athlete gets injured and begins to bleed, they must be immediately removed from play. The wound must be covered with a dressing that prevents transmission, and if any blood is transferred to the uniform, it must be cleaned. As someone taking care of an athlete with a wound, you should wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns or aprons, etc.) If your hands or any part of your skin has come in contact with blood or other fluids, immediately wash with soap and water. In the disposal of any waste that is contaminated, use a biohazard bucket, or contain the contaminated pieces in a bag. Make sure any surfaces that were contaminated are cleaned with disinfectant, and the soiled rags should be separately trashed or washed.

The skin scrapes against a rough surface, causing the top layer of skin to wear away, exposing numerous blood capillaries. This increases the probability of infection, which may mean you need to follow up with a health care professional. To care for this wound, it needs to be washed with soap and water (if not available, hydrogen peroxide is a common cleaner) and dressed to protect from infection.

A laceration occurs when a blunt force is applied to a sharp or poorly padded bone, causing a jagged-edge cut. To take care of this wound, you would put pressure to stop the bleeding, clean the wound, place a dressing on it, and, if deep enough, medical attention would be needed. This may also result in skin avulsion, which would lead to a need for medical attention to reattach the skin.

This is a direct penetration of tissues. This can introduce the tetanus bacillus into the bloodstream, possibly making the athlete a victim of lockjaw. This means as soon as it happens, you need to seek medical attention because it can be deadly.

Skin is torn from the body. This is associated with major bleeding, so measures to control bleeding should be taken. To reattach the torn tissue, the avulsed tissue should be placed on moist gauze, preferably saturated with saline solution, and should be taken along with the athlete to the hospital for reattachment.
