Stage 1: Trust Vs. Mistrust

Erikson's first stage is trust vs. mistrust. This occurs between birth and 18 months old when infants completely depend upon caregivers for survival. A child would develop trust when a caregiver provides adequate care. Caregivers who do not provide adequate care lead to a child developing mistrust resulting in fear and a belief that the world is unkind. My parents told me that I was not a very fussy baby, but when I would cry they would pick me up and asses and fulfill my needs. My parents care for me led me to trust them. I would say that I resolved with a good sense of trust because I feel very secure in the world. According to the text, "If trust predominates, children develop hope, the belief they can fulfill their needs and obtain their desires." This text supports my resolution.

Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

This stage consists of emerging independence from ages 2 - 6. Children are better able to express their wishes and desires which leads to them expressing authority. When I was a child and my mom would tell me not to do something and I would look at her and tell her no and do it anyway. On the other hand, she let me have a lot of independence such as when I would make my own snacks and help with chores. According to the text, "As children are better able to make their wishes understood, they become more powerful and independent." I believe that I resolved in autonomy because my parents promoted controlled independence and I am now an independent person.

Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt

The third stage takes place during the preschool years. Children start to assert their control during social situations. A child who is successful at asserting an appropriate amount of control over an environment leads to a sense of purpose. According to the book, "Children who exert too much power experience disapproval, resulting in a sense of guilt." I know that I was very bossy in preschool when I was a child. My parents would say I was overly bossy and the older I became the more I felt guilty about how I treated others. To this day, I am timid about telling others what to do. So I would say that my resolution was one more of guilt.

The fourth stage is one where children develop a sense of pride in the tasks they accomplish. According to the text, "Children who are encouraged by parents and teachers would have a feeling of competence and belief in their skills." Those who receive little encouragement will doubt their abilities. My parents encouraged me a lot as did my teachers. I was always told that I could do whatever I set my mind to. I feel as though I resolved a successful balanced outcome because I am very competent in the things I do. I feel as though I am able to accomplish what I set my mind to.

The fifth stage takes place during the teenage years and is basically where children began to form a personal identity. According to the text, "Success leads to an ability to stay true to yourself, while failure leads to role confusion and a weak sense of self." When I was a young teenager, my parents really encouraged me to explore my identity. I was involved in all kinds of clubs and sports, I had friends with a variety of interests, and I was aloud to wear make-up and color my hair. I feel as though I resolved in a successful personal identity because I know who I am and am very secure in myself.

The sixth stage is the stage in which young adults form intimate relationships with others. If young people successfully do this, it leads to them forming strong relationships. The text says, "Erikson believed that a strong sense of personal identity was important for developing intimate relationships." I feel as though I have a strong sense of self. I also have very deep meaningful relationships with others. Most of the friends I currently have are people that have been my friends all the way though middle and high school, now in college. Therefore, I feel that I had a successful resolution of this stage.

The seventh stage is one where adults create things that will outlive them. These would be things such as building a successful career, having children, and making accomplishments. The book says, "Success leads to feelings of usefulness and accomplishment, while failure results in shallow involvement of the world." I would say that I am currently in this stage. I feel very content with the things that I have already accomplished in this life, but I am in college trying to start a career. I also look forward to starting a family and being successful in my career. If I continue on the current path, I will be successful by feeling that I contribute something positive to the world.

The eighth stage is one that happens during old age and is focused on looking back at life. People look at what they have accomplished in life and decide if they are happy with the way things played out. The text says, "Older adults need to look back on life and feel a sense of fulfillment." I would have a successful resolution of gaining wisdom by making sure that I make choices that fulfill my life. If I do this then I would be able to end my life with a feeling of peace.
