There were many reasons for this hysteria, one being the puritan's belief in the devil. This belief stretched into a variety of things, that being another belief that Satan recruits witches and wizards to perform his deeds. Teenage boredom was also a big factor, along with old feuds. Old feuds meant accusing people you didn't like of witchcraft. Limited Atonement was also a strong belief and that Jesus Christ only died for a few, given why there is an elect in the first place.
