Puritanism/Puritans

Puritans, as seen in the picture above are shown to be in very plain clothing due to the fact that they prefer everything to be "pure". The Puritans supporting a need for reform, went against the ways of the Church of England. Leading for the group to be persecuted by the King of England, and forced to flee. They'd move to a variety of places before settling in the New World solidifying themselves as "pilgrims". They'd go on to settle Massachusetts Bay Colony, and with it they'd establish their quite theological beliefs the following being; total depravity, predestination, limited atonement, as-well as grace.

Above shows a vivid image of what seems to be a public execution for a witch. With men dragging the assumed to be witch to the chair. The Witch Trials do though have a vivid background, with the event first starting with the strange behaviors of Betty Parris. From this sprouted a group of children also getting sick and speaking nonsense and unusual behavior. This would then lead them to believe that witchcraft was coming into play. Suspected affliction would become a thing of high interest, pulling apart the Salem community and causing many to be wrongly blamed.

Puritans shown in the picture above, wanted a society. A society where god would be the leading force, where he would be in book and scripture. That their new Massachusetts Colony would be a Utopia that all of the New World look upon in awe at. All that would transpire in the end would be a broken Salem. Riddled by cases of witchcraft, death's, and darkness.

Witchcraft Hysteria

Above is shown an execution of a witch due to the mass effect witchcraft hysteria produced. There were many reasons for this hysteria, one being the puritan's belief in the devil. This belief stretched into a variety of things, that being another belief that Satan recruits witches and wizards to perform his deeds. Teenage boredom was also a big factor, along with old feuds. Old feuds meant accusing people you didn't like of witchcraft. It was a mess, causing various people to die and a lot of people to go to jail.

John Calvin as pictured above is the posterboy for Calvinism. Including it's very theological beliefs espoused by Puritans. These would include total depravity, and the fact that everyone has sins due to the fall of Adam and Eve. As-well as pre-destination and a certain elect being destined for heaven. Limited Atonement was also a strong belief and that Jesus Christ only died for a few, given why there is an elect in the first place. Lastly grace came, which in most cases meant that you were going to heaven.
