Most of the available resources were channelled to Japan's war efforts rather than to the people. Goods were sold at high prices on the black market due to the shortage of goods. However, some people were able to obtain more goods by working for the Japanese and some people manage to grow crops.(eg. sweet potatoes)

Dear mum,
How are you? I hope you and dad are fine. It had been a long time that I last saw you. I am lucky to survive during the Japanese Occupation. During the Japanese Occupation, the Japanese treat us , the locals, really bad. The life for us during that time was difficult. The Japanese do not even treat us like a human being.
We do not get enough food to eat as the the war had disrupted trade, which causing limited goods to import into Singapore. There is one time we were asked to pack our belongings and told to leave. They brought us to one place and asked us some questions. One of the question is are you educated in chinese. At that point of time, I do not know what is happening but in the end I was safe and they gave a piece of paper and let me go home. A few days later, I heard from my friend that Japanese was carring out Sook Ching, those who were educated in chinese were killed by the Japanese.
The Japanese brought a lot of fear to us, there is once I saw a man was been beaten up by the Japanese soilder as he did not bow to the Japanese soilder. The Japanese soilders beat us if he felt that we are not respecting them but also sometime, the Japanese soilders will just beat us without any reason. The Japanese just do what they like at anywhere to us.The Japanese tried to win our support but there is still many locals joining the anti-Japanese activities.
Although during the time of Japanese Occupation was harsh but it was all over now. I hope that everything will be fine now and please take care of yourself, mum.

From your daughter, Ann.
