Many of these myths and legends give Singaporeans an insight into Singapore's past, like how we were originally a fishing village as well as our kampong culture. they show how people of different background came together as one to not protect each other but also work together to build the country up to where it is today.

2. to highlight qualities unique to our culture

for instance, the Merlion's unique structure consisting of different features may show Singapore's strong community or kampong spirit, as people of different race and religions come together as one with the common goal to keep Singapore thriving so that we can continue to remain prevalent in a increasingly competitive and globalized world

Lee Kuan Yew reflects Singaporeans' inner strength and desire to continue growing. his courage and determination displayed just to strive for Singapore to be the best has instilled our culture of "kiasuism".

living in Singapore also allows for everyday interactions and relationships with other citizens across all backgrounds, celebrating every race and religion around here through events such as racial harmony day. I feel grateful to be able to grow up in an environment which highlights the importance of social cohesion and being united as one.

that being said, I still feel a sense of longing for a more progressive society, and for certain communities, especially religious ones, to have a more open mind towards minority groups in the country which are currently facing discrimination. for example, the subject of the LGBT community has garnered lots of controversy in the country amongst religious people or people of the older generations, who see the community as a threat to the well being of our country. common misconceptions and unjustified views of this community being weird or creepy continue to surface around the country which may make the community feel rather uncomfortable. other underlying issues also include gender inequality through lower pay for women in some industries or making national service mandatory only for men. despite portraying the image of all races in Singapore living in harmony, casual racism, unfortunately, also still exists in the country, with many adults still using racial slurs, being a bad influence on their children. 

being a student in Singapore can also be more a lot pressuring as compared to other countries, with the highly competitive education here in Singapore. long school hours coupled with extra curricular activities and tuition classes take a toll on students' mental health which is often sidelined. this extra competitiveness likely stems from the fact that there seems to be job insecurity in some industries in Singapore as many roles and opportunities are provided to foreign talent. it may be harder to men in Singapore as well due to National Service putting as 2 years behind to climb the social ladder, which by the time we take on, may be almost completely filled with foreign talent. 

overall, though I do not take Singapore's safety and racial harmony for granted, it can often be very stressful and hectic with little work-life balance, as well as the social stigma towards certain societal issues in the country that should deserve more attention.
