Observation and comfort

The first time I went into the clinic I received a thorough observation and was made to feel very comfortable throughout my session. The practitioner observed my body in an extremely detailed way and mentioned a lot of things that I had already learnt in class but maybe hadn't paid 100% attention too. For example the different bony landmarks. (This more the knowledge, skills and performance OPS but I want to focus on how she communicated about her observation to me and how she made me comfortable in doing it). When being a patient in osteopathy I can imagine how it can be awkward and uncomfortable for some people. The fact that you have to take your clothes off and be 'judged' in a way can be almost demoralising. I would like to focus on this word 'judged' and say that when I was at the clinic I felt the complete opposite. The communication that the practitioner gave me about my body was extremely interesting and more over the way she delivered the information was very comfortable for me and I would imagine any other patient.

During my own life I have always had a problem with having a strong opinion. This sometimes lead to other people being upset or frustrated with me because they felt I was too strongly opinionated and wasn't willing to change my opinion. Sometimes I felt they could have been right, however sometimes I felt they were arguing my fact with there opinion. Which rationally speaking, doesn't work. Whilst being at the European School of osteopathy my stand on being strongly opinionated has changed and I now feel I am more open to listening what other people have to tell me. One thing I feel a student did excellently well during my first clinic experience was listen to the tutors knowledge and take into account his way of treating. Due to the fact that she didn't counteract his points made it so that I could be treated in a cranial way, which this time was the correct way for me. I am not saying I think it is important always do as you're told but it was very interesting and eye opening for me to be able to see a person listening so carefully and doing exactly what another person said to them because that person has more knowledge than them. For me experiencing a cranial treatment work on myself was mind blowing. This is because I know myself and I know I wouldn't have allowed myself to except that this might be possible without experiencing it myself.

Throughout my life I have struggled with back pain and neck pain. For these ailments I have seeked a lot of professional help, including physios, osteopaths, chiropractors and Chinese medicine practitioners. None of which have been overly successful. I have no problem with unsuccessful treatment, I believe not everything will work. However, I do have a problem with giving false hope to patients so that they will come back to see you. This is something I have experienced from various different health care professionals. I believe you cannot put a price on health. Though sometimes I feel people use this believe in order to get money out of you when they don't particularly know how to cure you.

This was not something that I experienced at the clinic (even though I wasn't paying anyway). The tutor gave me hope without giving false hope and set clear exceptions on the amount of sessions he thought it would take for me to be better.

The first time I went into the clinic as a patient was because I had been suffering with a blocked nose and a bad neck for around 6 months. I had tried everything to treat myself, tablets, breathing olbas oil and boiling water, exercising more and other things in order to relieve my blocked nose. I had had no success. I went to the clinic with very little expectation and had thought I would receive similar treatment to what my osteopath gave me at home, soft tissue and HVTs. This is all I thought osteopathy was, and at this stage in my life I wouldn’t have believed anything anyone told me that wasn’t backed up with a lot of scientific research and experiments.
