Indonesia’s marine ecosystem, once rich and diverse, is now facing a severe crisis due to overfishing. Small-scale fishermen, who once thrived near the shore, are experiencing a 68% drop in catches and income as fish stocks diminish. Industrial fishing fleets dominate, while local fishermen struggle to survive. Overfishing not only threatens their livelihoods but also the ecological balance of Indonesia’s oceans and the food security of millions. Immediate action through sustainable practices and stricter regulations is crucial to reverse this ocean emergency. #SaveOurFish

75% of Indonesia's fish resources are fully exploited or subject to overfishing. Without immediate changes in our fishing practices, these crucial ecosystems may collapse. It’s time to take action and rebuild overfished fisheries. Sustainable methods can help ensure that fish stocks recover, safeguarding both the environment and future livelihoods. Act now to protect our oceans before it’s too late.

In addition, ministry documents reported that exports of frozen sharks were 4,032.3 tons, but according to BKIPM data, it was 4,785 tons

The large difference in these two reports are extremely worrying because it means that even their official counts are off because of the lack of proper monitoring.

There are three main causes why the Indonesian sea is contaminated by plastic waste. First, we lack waste management infrastructure. Many rural areas in Indonesia lack proper waste management infrastructure, which leads to open dumping and littering. Second, we often used single-use plastics. The use of single-use plastics, such as plastic bags, straws, and water bottles, is widespread in Indonesia and can cause serious problems. Third, river pollution. We, as humans, often throw trash into rivers which cause pollution. Without recognition, polluted rivers, which are a significant source of plastic waste in Indonesian seas, flow into the ocean.

According to seaturtlestatus.org, sea turtles come into contact with plastic debris at various stages throughout their life cycle and in a range of different habitats both near the coast and out in the open ocean. One thing that often makes them die is eating plastic. Sea turtles can ingest plastic by mistaking it for their natural food (for example, a plastic bag that looks like a jellyfish), or by accidentally eating plastic that is present among their natural food.

The mangrove biomes are home to many marine life, and with this deforestation, those rich natural resources are lost!

East Kalimantan is home to one of the largest mangrove forests in Indonesia. The mangrove forest is a victim of deforestation, rapidly declining over the years dating way back to the 1990s. People cut down these trees to convert the land for aquaculture and illegal logging.

From this article, we can learn that there are around 4,000 species of fish spread across Indonesia's seas. The rise of overfishing in a number of areas in Indonesia has led to declining catches and made it difficult for small fishermen to escape poverty.

Declining catches and increasingly distant fishing grounds were reported in a number of marine areas in Indonesia, including the Malacca Strait, eastern Sumatra waters, Java Sea, and Bali Strait. In a study measuring the impact of overfishing on fishermen's income in Rokan Hilir Regency, Riau Province, it was found that overfishing has caused a 68.91% decrease in fishermen's catch and a 68.72% decrease in fishermen's catch income.

According to a recent four-year study by an international study group (environmental scientists and economists), all seafood from wild species is now projected to be extinct by 2050, with an estimated 90% depletion.

if the fish in the sea begin to decrease, then fishermen will find it difficult to catch fish. In fact, the role of fishermen is also important because fish is one of the foods that we often consume. If there are no more fish in the sea, we will no longer eat fish, right?

One of the ways trash and gunk can get to the sea is via rivers. All over the world and through history, people dunk their trash into the river cause it's an easy way to get rid it. But now that we industrialized and produce A LOT more rubbish, throwing stuff into the rivers is not a viable option anymore(Never has been). The river we will be focusing on today is the Tarum river, also known as Citarum. Fun fact, the name of the river originated from the Tarumanagara kingdom which settled near the river and dated back to the 4th century.

Throwing trash into rivers is a bad idea. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU RELY ON SAID RIVER. The people that live next to the Tarum river also rely on the river for their water(ew). The people also fish one of the trash out of the river to resell it. About 5 million people live next to the river and rely on it, which is especially bad cause of how screwed up the river is. The river is also used for hydroelectric and irrigation dams, which I bet is difficult due to all that crap floating in the water. The people's situation is really sad due to them not having clear drinkable water, but it's also their fault for dumping trash into the river in the first place. If you destroy the river by throwing crap in it, they you are basically destroying yourselves.

You can clearly see the difference with the sea water away from shore and near the shores of Indonesia, especially near the mouth of the Tarum river. We if we want a clean sea then we gotta stop this madness from the source, the River source(he said the line!).The problems for the river pollution were lack of money for continuing action, lack of coordination at the local level, bribes paid by factories to avoid change, and upstream soil erosion from deforestation that enhances the silting of the lower river. Back in November of 2011 the project of revitalizing the river had begun. The efforts were not cheap at all, costing about 35 trillion Rp for the next 15 of the project. But in February of 2018, beloved president Joko Widodo(THE GOAT) launched a 7 year plan to clean the water to "clean drinking water" status, in which he ordered 7000 regular soldiers to clean up the river, block further pollution, and install ways to purify the water. This job as become more easier recently due to publication and attention from the internet which has helped support the effort.

Few might know this, but oceans both bind carbon monoxide, as well as host algae that produces oxygen, essential systems that are now under threat due to ocean acidification.

Oceans and seas regulate climate, produce oxygen and give us food. Moreover, they generate employment for more than 200 million people.

WHAT IS OCEAN WARMING?

When solar radiation enters Earth's atmosphere, about half is reflected back into space by the atmosphere and clouds. The remaining half is absorbed by the Earth's surface, converting to heat.

The greenhouse gas layer traps heat in the atmosphere to keep the dark side of the Earth from freezing over, but an overabundance of these gasses causes an excess amount of heat to be trapped.

The oceans warm up as the Earth does. Additionally the more carbon is present in the atmosphere, the more carbon gets incorporated into the ocean, causing ocean acidification.
