Shot selection inspiration.

Target Audience

As my target audience, I've identified action figure collectors, specifically men from 30 to 50 years old who have some disposable income and enjoy collecting things from their childhood, such as Star Wars, Transformers and other IPs. The audience wants to relive what some consider the most memorable time of their lives.

AIDA process

Attention = I am planning to grab the audience's attention using sounds inspired by the toy ads of the 1980s and 1990s, as well as nostalgic sounds of children playing with toys in their backyard.

Interest and Desire = Toys from a favourite cartoon series or movie are still one of my target audience's fascinations. Reminiscent of the feeling they got when unboxing their first toy, they are willing to spend a lot of money on the plastic that fuelled their childhoods.

Call to Action = Upon the end of the advertisement, the audience will be directed to multiple sources where they can buy the advertised items, from in person at a store like Big W to an online store like Hasbro's official website.

Treatment

Opening scene a retro advertisement is playing on a dark wall, it is two children having the time of their lives playing with their action figures not to dissimilar from the one we are trying to sell in this advertisement. Begin to zoom out

Shot 2 : We zoom out to a wider shot as we zoom out the product comes into view placing it in the centre this shot will be achieved by using a slider.

Shot 3 : smash cut to the box rotating on a rotating display stand (Retro advert still playing in the background) In these shots we are trying to get as much coverage of the box art as possible utilising techniques such as slow motion and speed ramping

Shot 4 : The product has been unbox and utilising the same techniques in the previous shot to get as much coverage of the products sculpture and accessories

The final shot will be a dolly into the main product from a wide shot having it front and centre flanked by its box and other figures in the collection with a call to action letting the audience know exactly where and when they can purchase the item whether it be online or in person.

Fonts/Typography

Due to my product falling under the Hasbro banner the typography is limited to the Proxima Nova (TT) font family according to the style guide.

Tone

This is an advertisement that has a dual tone: while the sound and playfulness of the kids playing in their backyard are playful, they are juxtaposed with sleek and modern styling. We want them to feel like kids, but at the same time, we want them to know this is more than just another action figure.

Colour Palette

While researching the colour palette for the advertisement, I knew that I wanted it to reflect the films on which the collectables are based. I came across an article from Vox which researched each colour palette in detail.

This book examines the role that collectibles, merchandise and toys play in fandom, arguing that these objects become symbols of nostalgia for collectors. I used this book to explore the consumer culture that my advertisement aims to address. In particular, the important role that cult television and film merchandise plays in fan’s lives.

Lundy, J, 2020 ‘The Enduring Force of Kenner Star Wars Toy Commercials’ The Transmedia Franchise of Star Wars TV, pp. 11-36

This book was used because it looks directory at Kenner, a toy company that produced that first Star Wars toys. The chapter explores how Kenner revolutionized the toy industry and played a key role in the success of the Star Wars franchise. It demonstrates that toy commercials contributed to building a fan community that has endured for more than 40 years.

Byne, C, 2013 A Profile of the United States Toy Industry, Serious Fun Second Edition, Business Expert Press New York

I used this book because it provides a broader overview of the toy industry in America. It is a useful guide to the size of the toy industry, the market share, current advertising and marketing trends at the time of publication and what the industry can expect in the future.

Assessment 2 Promo Video Self Reflection.

I began this process with a clear idea that has been refined over time. Although my final video reflects my initial plans, my expectations were greater than the skills that I had to produce it. My advertisements emotional hook was nostalgia. I wanted the viewer to feel like a child again, which I why I chose to start the video with the boy playing with his favourite Star Wars toy from the 2000s. I would have liked to extend these opening shots for more than four seconds, but they set the tone and express the message that I intended. I used other visual cues such as wipe transitions between each shot of the contemporary Star Wars action figures. These transitions are used throughout the entire Star Wars franchise. I selected action figures that represented characters from each part of the franchise which is a feature of the toy line. During the editing process, it became very apparent that sound design was just as critical as the visuals. I selected audio sound bites / quotes from each character that were used in emotional scenes from Star Wars films and TV series. Due to copyright reasons, I could not use John William’s original score but I located copyright free music from Artlist that fits the brief perfectly. I did a really excellent job of realising my original concept with a few tweaks due skill and equipment limitations. For example, I would have liked to incorporate shots using a slider but I did not have access to one.
