         <description><![CDATA[<div>Dioxins are mainly by-products of industrial processes but can also result from natural processes, such as volcanic eruptions and forest fires. Dioxins are unwanted by-products of a wide range of manufacturing processes including smelting, chlorine bleaching of paper pulp and the manufacturing of some herbicides and pesticides. In terms of dioxin release into the environment, uncontrolled waste incinerators (solid waste and hospital waste) are often the worst culprits, due to incomplete burning. Technology is available that allows for controlled waste incineration with low dioxin emissions.<br><br></div><div>Although formation of dioxins is local, environmental distribution is global. Dioxins are found throughout the world in the environment. The highest levels of these compounds are found in some soils, sediments and food, especially dairy products, meat, fish and shellfish. Very low levels are found in plants, water and air.<br><br></div><div>Extensive stores of PCB-based waste industrial oils, many with high levels of PCDFs, exist throughout the world. Long-term storage and improper disposal of this material may result in dioxin release into the environment and the contamination of human and animal food supplies. PCB-based waste is not easily disposed of without contamination of the environment and human populations. Such material needs to be treated as hazardous waste and is best destroyed by high temperature incineration in specialised facilities.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of organic compounds consisting of two or more fused aromatic rings. PAHs originate mainly from anthropogenic processes, particularly from incomplete combustion of organic fuels. PAHs are distributed widely in the atmosphere. Natural processes, such as volcanic eruptions and forest fires, also contribute to an ambient existence of PAHs. PAHs can be present in both particulate and gaseous phases, depending upon their volatility. Light molecular weight PAHs (LMW PAHs) that have two or three aromatic rings are emitted in the gaseous phase, while high molecular weight PAHs (HMW PAHs), with five or more rings, are emitted in the particulate phase. In the atmosphere, PAHs can undergo photo-degradation and react with other pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and ozone.<br><br></div><div>Due to widespread sources and persistent characteristics, PAHs disperse through atmospheric transport and exist almost everywhere. Human beings are exposed to PAH mixtures in gaseous or particulate phases in ambient air. Long-term exposure to high concentrations of PAHs is associated with adverse health problems. Since some PAHs are considered carcinogens, inhalation of PAHs in particulates is a potentially serious health risk linked to an excess risk of lung cancer. Thus, studies on PAHs in particulate matter (PM), such as PM10 and PM2.5 in ambient air, have become attention greater focus of research in recent years.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>PCBs are a group of 209 different compounds. PCBs are man-made and have no smell. They are yellow, <br><br>oily liquids that don’t easily burn. There are no natural sources of PCBs. Companies in the United States <br><br>first made PCBs in 1929. They’ve been used as coolants in electrical equipment, metal-cutting oils, <br><br>microscope lens oils, and in inks, dyes, and carbonless copy paper.<br><br>PCBs break down very slowly and can be carried long distances in the air, in rivers, lakes and oceans. <br><br>PCBs can build up over time in the fat of people and animals. Recent studies found that most people <br><br>have traces of PCBs in their body fat. PCBs can build-up in the food chain. For example, fish can have <br><br>PCB levels in their fatty tissues that are much higher than the surrounding water.<br><br>Although the use of PCBs is now severely restricted it has been estimated that total world production 
<br>from the 1930s to 1980s was between one and two million tonnes. The compounds are very resistant to 
<br>degradation and, as a consequence, PCBs are still widely present in the environment, albeit at very low 
<br>levels, and are still found in foods. The main sources of PCBs in the diet are from meat, fish and milk.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The sources of PAH<br><br>PAHs are mainly derived from anthropogenic activities related to pyrolysis and incomplete combustion of organic matter. Emission sources of PAHs affect their characterization and distribution, as well as their toxicity. In this book, the major sources of PAH emissions may be divided into four classes: stationary sources (including domestic and industrial sources), mobile emissions, agriculture activities, and natural sources.<br><br>3.1 Stationary sources<br><br></div><div><strong>3.1.1. DOMESTIC SOURCES<br></strong><br></div><div>Heating and cooking are dominant domestic sources of PAHs. The burning and pyrolysis of coal, oil, gas, garbage, wood, or other organic substances are the main domestic sources. Domestic sources are important contributors to the total emissions of PAHs in the environment. Differences in climate patterns and domestic heating systems produce large geographic variations in domestic emissions. PAH emissions from these sources may be a major health concern because of their prevalence in indoor environments (Ravindra et al., 2006). According to a recent World Health Organization (WHO) report, more than 75% of people in China, India, and South East Asia and 50-75% of people in parts of South America and Africa use combustion of solid fuels, such as wood, for daily cooking.<br><br></div><div>Main indoor PAH sources are cooking and heating emissions and infiltration from outdoors. PAHs emissions from cooking account for 32.8% of total indoor PAHs (<a href="https://www.intechopen.com/books/air-polution/sources-distribution-and-toxicity-of-polyaromatic-hydrocarbons-pahs-in-particulate-matter#B77">Zhu et al., 2009</a>). LMW PAHs which originate from indoor sources are the predominant proportion of the total PAHs identified in residential non-smoking air. Toxicity of PAH mixtures from indoor sources is lower than mixtures which contain large amounts of HMW PAHs. Cigarette smoke is also a dominant source of PAHs in indoor environments. In many studies, PAHs in the indoor air of smoking residences tend to be higher than those of non-smoking residences.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The health effects that can be caused by exposure to PAHs depend on --</div><ul><li>-how much has entered the body,</li><li>-how long you have been exposed to PAHs, and</li><li>-how the body responds to PAHs.</li></ul><div>These effects may be either short-term or long-term.</div><div>Short-term health effects</div><div>It is not clear that PAHs cause short-term health effects. Other compounds commonly found with PAHs may be the cause of short-term symptoms such as eye irritation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and confusion.</div><div>Long-term health effects</div><div>Long-term health effects of exposure to PAHs may include cataracts, kidney and liver damage, and jaundice. Repeated skin contact to the PAH naphthalene can result in redness and inflammation of the skin. Breathing or swallowing large amounts of naphthalene can cause the breakdown of red blood cells.</div><div>Long-term exposure to low levels of some PAHs have caused cancer in laboratory animals. Benzo(a)pyrene is the most common PAH to cause cancer in animals. Studies of workers exposed to mixtures of PAHs and other compounds have noted an increased risk of skin, lung, bladder, and gastrointestinal cancers. The information provided by these studies is limited because the workers were exposed to other potential cancer-causing chemicals besides PAHs. Although animal studies have shown adverse reproductive and developmental effects from PAH exposure, these effects have generally not been seen in humans.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Contaminated soil<br><br></div><div>If you live in an area where the soil has been contaminated with PAHs, the following steps can help to reduce your exposure:<br><br></div><ul><li>1. it is not recommended vegetables are grown in contaminated soil</li><li>2. to prevent dust, the soil should be covered with a thick layer of mulch (300mm) and regularly replenished or covered with a thick layer of soil, or some hard surface such as pavers.</li><li>3. stabilising the soil with a ground cover can also be used as a measure to reduce dust</li><li>4. wear gloves and dust masks if you need to deal with contaminated soil</li><li>5. wash gardening equipment and footwear before going indoors</li><li>6. have groundwater tested to ensure it is suitable for the intended purpose</li><li>7. wash your hands before eating and after playing in the yard</li><li>8. do not allow pets to come into contact with contaminated soil</li><li>9.have bore (ground) water tested to ensure it is suitable for the intended purpose for both bacteria and chemical contamination</li></ul><div><br>Some PAHs may evaporate from contaminated soil and result in the detection of odours. Should odours arising from ground sources be detected, avoid the inhalation of these odours and contact SA Health's <a href="http://www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/wps/wcm/connect/public+content/sa+health+internet/about+us/department+of+health/public+health+and+clinical+systems/public+health+services/public+health+services">Scientific Services</a> for advice.<br><br></div><div>Do not remove naphthalene balls from their child resistant containers. In small children it has been found that half a mothball can cause serious adverse effects requiring hospitalisation.<br><br></div><div>Reducing your child's exposure<br><br></div><div>As young children are more at risk, refer to the following the tips to reduce their exposure to PAHs:<br><br></div><ul><li>1. do not allow young children to come into contact with the contaminated soil</li><li>2. wash your child's hands before eating</li><li>3. wash your child's hands after playing outdoors</li><li>4. ensure toys are cleaned before being brought inside</li><li>5. children should be excluded from areas where odours from ground contamination are noticed</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Introduction ~ No specific treatment exists for PCB accumulation. Patients should avoid further PCB exposure and also avoid other hepatotoxic substances, including ethanol.<br>Acute Exposure ~ Treat acute skin and eye PCB exposure immediately by flushing with copious amounts of water. However, post-contamination washing cannot ensure removal of all contamination [Wester et al. 1983].Remove contaminated clothing and discard properly.Carefully observe patients with inhalation exposure for any systemic signs or symptoms of toxicity and administer treatment as necessary. No specific measures are available to reduce respiratory tract absorption.In the rare event of ingestion of PCBs, emesis would be contraindicated because of the high risk of aspiration. The value of administering activated charcoal after ingestion is unknown. Unless a patient has an intact or protected airway, administering charcoal is contraindicated [Alaspaa et al. 2005; Chyka et al. 2005].Exposed persons should have periodic follow-up examinations with particular attention to hepatic function and dermal lesions.<br>Key Points ~No antidote exists for PCB exposure; therefore, treatment is supportive.<br>Chronic Exposure~ No specific treatment is available for chronic PCB toxicity. Because no known methods exist for reducing the reserves of PCBs in adipose tissues, purging the body of PCBs should not be attempted.Initial treatment of chloracne is based onCessation of PCB exposure,Good skin hygiene, and Dermatological measures commonly used for acne vulgaris. Given the difficulty in treating chloracne, the patient should be referred to a dermatologist. If chronic exposure has occurred due to consuming contaminated fish or game, the patient should be informed that PCBs tend to accumulate in the body with continued exposure, and counseled about the importance of minimizing further exposure.In areas with a known PCB problem, state and local public health or natural resources departments typically issue advisories. These advisories specify the waters or hunting areas where PCB-contaminated fish and game likely are, and list the species and size of fish or game that are of concern. Such advisories might completely ban consumption, or might recommend limits on the frequency with which certain species are to be consumed. To minimize the risk for further exposure, sport and subsistence fishers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with and observe advisory recommendations [ATSDR 2000].Patients should be monitored for increased hepatic enzymes. Because PCBs are hepatotoxins, history of exposure to other potentially hepatotoxic agents should be obtained. To minimize the risk of hepatic damage, patients should be encouraged to avoid exposure to other hepatotoxins, including medications with known hepatotoxicity, ethanol, and chlorinated solvents.The carcinogenic potential and other risks from exposure to PCBs should be carefully reviewed with the patient. AAP encourages breastfeeding in all but the most unusual circumstances [AAP 2003].<br>Prevention in the Workplace~ <br><strong>Work Practices: </strong>The following measures [LaDou 2006] may be adopted at work to avoid exposure to PCBs. Eliminate PCBs from the workplace or implement engineering changes to isolate the PCBs. If neither of these approaches is feasible, then use special PCB-resistant gloves and protective clothing.Maintain adequate ventilation during spill cleanup or maintenance of vessels containing PCBs. If this is not possible, provide approved respirators.Make provisions for proper decontamination or disposal of contaminated clothing or equipment.Post clearly the locations where PCBs are stored as required by law.Conduct environmental sampling as necessary to ensure adequate worker protection or safety for public reentry to contaminated areas.Establish reentry or cleanup levels for dioxins and PCBs to protect workers who reoccupy buildings after a PCB fire.Record health complaints of any type. <strong>Medical Surveillance: </strong>Workers intermittently exposed to PCBs should have a baseline skin examination and liver function tests. For workers with signs and symptoms consistent with large exposures to PCBs (e.g., chloracne, elevated AST and ALT), obtain confirmation of exposure to determine serum PCB level.<br>Prevention at Home ~<br><strong>Home Practices: </strong>Open all windows and use fans in your work space when maintaining or repairing any products containing PCBs. Wear a respirator or protective gloves, or both.You and your children may be exposed to PCBs by eating fish or wildlife caught from contaminated locations. Certain states, Native American tribes, and U.S. territories have issued advisories to warn people about PCB-contaminated fish and fish-eating wildlife. You can reduce your family's exposure to PCBs by following these advisories.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

Eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables can reduce the proportion of animal fat in the diet.<br><br>When fishing for food, the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) advises people to check first on current dioxin levels with the local authority.<br><br></div><div>The <a href="https://www.epa.gov/dioxin/dioxins-produced-backyard-burning">EPA note</a> that backyard burning can be a major source of dioxins.<br><br></div><div>"Backyard burning of waste materials creates higher levels of dioxins than industrial incinerators and is particularly dangerous because it releases pollutants at the ground level where they are more readily inhaled or incorporated into the food chain."
