The majority of citizens in Myanmar practice Buddhism – roughly 87% - while smaller minority groups practice Christianity (6.2%), Islam (4.3%), Animism (0.8%), and Hinduism (0.5%), with religious group affiliation often closely coinciding with ethnic group identity (Cultural Atlas, 2022). Most Burmese Buddhists belong to the Theravāda or “Triple Gem" school, which in Burma also incorporates animistic nats – or spirits – that inhabit animals, plants, or objects, which are revered by the Burmese Buddhists through various shrines at holy sites (Cultural Atlas, 2022).

The Burmese language enjoys a position as the official lingua franca of Myanmar and the first tongue of the vast majority of her citizens (CELT, 2021). Burmese is spoken by an estimated 32 million people worldwide, including roughly two-thirds of Myanmar’s population and minority populations in Bangladesh, Malaysia, Thailand, and the United States (CELT, 2021). Myanmar is also home to a number of minority languages. The most widely spoken of these minority languages are Shan and Karen, both of which are spoken by roughly 3 million indigenous speakers, while others such as Kachin, Chin, and Mon-Khmer occupy a much smaller share. Use of minority languages is, however, strongly and historically discouraged by Myanmar’s government in favor of Burmese (Lintner, 2003, p. 189).

According to Everyculture.org, there are many popular forms of art ranging from sculptures, tempera mural painting, carving, metal work, jewelry, ceramics, glassware, and lacquerware.
