The Underground Railroad is not an actual railroad. It is a trail of people, houses, and waystations in order to assist runaway slaves by giving them safer passage up north. The safe houses and waystations would have special code in order to mark what houses were safe or not.

Manifest destiny is the belief that it is America's destiny to move and expand westward. Owning the continent was believed as their God given right. The more west America moved the more land the southern farmers would be able to own. The three basic themes to manifest destiny would be the special virtues of the American people, the mission of the United States to civilize from west to east, and the irresistible feeling to fulfill their duty to civilizing the west coast.
