I am Zachary Carrasco, currently a freshman Undeclared Liberal arts major at UT. I came to UT because it is where my mom went to school. However, I have one sister who is a senior in high school and plans on attending Texas A&M in the fall, which is incredibly disappointing to me. I am from a small town south of San Antonio called Pleasanton, that only a handful of people have actually heard of. In high school I played football and baseball, both of which I miss a lot. Overall I am very excited about this class and what it has in store this semester.

Universalism and Particularism are two contrasting philosophies that determine our actions. On one hand, the universalist strictly follows the rules despite how corrupt or irrelevant they may seem. They also ensure that everyone is treated equally. On the other, the particularist behaves more according to the situation. A common example is a car at a stop light when no one is around. The universalist would stop because those are the rules while the particularist would run the light thinking that it would do no harm. My first picture is the logo for the Austin Police department. They represent the good side of universalism. They are the law and order in our city, protecting us and making sure that everyone is following the rules. The more debatable part of universalism is shown in my second picture: an anti-immigration sign. Some people would say that illegal immigrants are simply trying to help their families, the universalist says that they broke the law and should be treated as criminals. My third picture shows a particularist viewpoint. It is a scene from “V for Vendetta”, a movie about a revolutionary fighting his corrupt government. The main character, “V”, believes his actions are just because of the corrupt government. His actions are completely situational. Another side of particularism is shown by my last picture, a screenshot from “The Godfather”. This is meant to show that when groups disregard the law and act purely situational, organizations such as the mafia spring up. The two concepts are polar opposite viewpoints on how the environment affects our behavior.

Individualism and Communitarianism are opposite philosophies that determine how people in a society think and behave. Individualism is based on the power of the individual. It is the belief that everyone has the right to individual opportunities to better their life. It allows people to be unique, hence the first picture which depicts a red figure standing out among a group of gray figures. Individualism allows “eagles to soar” as in my second picture. The exaggeration of individualism justifies egotism, which allows people to behave any way they see fit despite it being harmful to others. Communitarianism can be great due to the sense of community. People in this type of society work not to benefit the individual, but society as a whole. My third picture shows a group of people holding hands, which demonstrates the ideal of community. Even works together for a common goal, not for individual gain. However, communitarianism can mean that if community is in misery, then everyone in it is in misery as well. Exaggerated communitarianism means the individual has to share the misery of the group. My last picture shows the individual being shot down by replacing his “Me?” with a “We?” which sums up the idea of communitarianism.

In the USA, we live in a very specific society. This means that most things are straight to the point. From tasks, to rules to intentions, it is all spelled out directly. This is represented by the sign that says keep off of the grass. It is clear and direct but it provides no context as to why this rule exists. Also, work spaces in the USA focus mainly on individual responsibilities, hence the picture of the picture of the boss. Diffuse cultures are quite different though. Compare the sign in the USA vs the sign in China. The Chinese sign is less direct but it gives you more context as to why this rule exists. Diffuse cultures also tend to believe that everyone should be involved in the tasks, everyone helps everyone.

The American Dream is a perfect representation of an achieved society. When we are young, we are told that we can be anything we want to be if we work hard enough. That perfectly encapsulates the idea of achievement. On the other hand, there are ascribed societies. Societies in which your status comes from history rather than achievement. For example, I included a picture of the Royal family because it shows the ascribed ideology very well. They are all born into the family, which is where their power comes from. A similar thing can be said about Blue Ivy Carter, Beyonce and Jay-Z’s baby. She is just a kid and yet millions of people know her name not because of her actions but because of what she was born into. My achievement pictures include a man with his arms in the air victoriously and a screenshot from the movie Rocky. They depict dedication and hard work, two defining factors of an achieved mindset.

Inner vs. Outer is an interesting way to look at the way societies differ. For me, it was less obvious than some of the previous dilemmas we discussed. Essentially, it boils down to how we interpret the world. An inner type person would prefer to use their mind and their judgement to make a decision. While an outer person would prefer to look at the world around him and use that to make his decision. An outer person would believe in predestination, fate and the “laws of the universe” which is why I included the picture of the bible, representing Christianity. Many Christians believe that God has a plan for them that is going to happen as long as they are a good Christian. My other outer picture depicts a casino representing luck. In a debate whether luck is real, an outer person is likely to say yes. My two inner pictures show a person thinking and Neo from the Matrix. The man thinking shows that he is using his head to work out a problem. Finally I included Neo because in the movie he is asked whether he believes in fate and to which he replies that he does not because he does not like feeling like he has no control over his life.

Time is viewed differently depending on the culture. In the United States, we view time almost like a resource, making sure that things are worth spending our time on before we do them. That is why I included a picture that says “Time is Money”, it shows that Americans value proper use of time. My other picture depicting a sequential lifestyle shows a very busy bus schedule, something that you will only see in sequential countries. In synchronous countries, time is more flexible. It is interconnected and time does not drive the task. They are not as punctual. My two synchronous pictures show a person multitasking and a picture of a carnival in Rio de Janeiro. The multitasking person shows that someone with a synchronous mindset does not believe in the punctuality of a sequential philosophy. The carnival shows a complete disregard of time. It does not matter how much time they spend there. The only thing that matters it their experience while there.
