<title>The marshes are where Pip first realizes his own situation in the world- as an orphan, he feels both a sense of isolation and a feeling of &quot;survivor guilt.&quot; This setting is gloomy and depressing - suggesting a bleak mood of alienation and sadness. It is here that Pip first encounters the convict.</title>

<title>The forge refers both to Pip&#39;s home and to the blacksmith&#39;s shop attached to it, next to the marshes. Characters associated with the forge are Pip&#39;s sister, who is raising him &quot;by hand&quot; and Pip&#39;s brother-in-law, Joe, whose kindly nature is Pip&#39;s comfort in a frightening world. The forge is also associated with Orlick, Joe&#39;s blacksmith&#39;s apprentice, who later becomes an ominous figure. The mood of this setting is usually cozy, although it can become claustrophobic and frightening when Mrs. Joe is &quot;on the rampage.&quot; Occasionally, Uncle Pumblechook, the Wopsles and the Hubbles come to visit.</title>

<title>The name &quot;Satis House&quot; literally means &quot;enough house.&quot; Pip is taken there to visit Miss Havisham, a very eccentric old woman who lives with her adopted daughter, Estella. At Satis House, Pip first learns to judge himself according to the way others see him. </title>
