Media is a medium for communication and has since evolved from being newspapers to different forms in today's world with a rapid development of technology. While maintaining its status as a form of entertainment, media when used properly, can be a good source for teaching and learning in the classroom.

Imagining media as a teacher in a classroom, she is able to take up many roles such as an instructor, facilitator, interpreter, and interest stimulator. Media not only promotes student engagement but also efficiently transfers knowledge which is difficult to be read and understood on books to the students.

With so many functions a media can give, what are the advantages of using media in a classroom? This can be viewed from two aspects: student and productivity.

In terms of student, not only students especially those who are from today's environment are familiar with media, their attention can be easily attained when it is being used; the contents of media also promote cognitive, affective, and culturally relevant or foreign experiences.

As for productivity, due to its high production rate, media is able to showcase many complex ideas with only a short period of time needed.

When should a teacher use media? The answer is, it can be both before or after the lesson. Before a lesson, run the media selected to show the topics that are about to be introduced, or alternatively, after a lesson, run the media selected so as to let the students reflect on the contents on the topics introduced.

So for future teachers or teacher trainees, here are some quick guides for you:
1. Start small - tryout this form of teaching and expand it once you are comfortable using it.
2. Be clear - what do you want your students to learn from the media you are using?
3. Understanding the purpose - media is not just a form of entertainment, but a method of enabling the students to learn more.
4. Enable subtitles - attaining students' attention.
5. Be and ALWAYS prepared - always have a backup plan because the equipment needed may not be functioning and this is often unpredictable.
6. Making evaluations - good attention retainer and of course, assessing your students in the lesson.

(Phang, Tee, & Heah)
