         <title>I enjoy the idea of giving them a game or fun activity to get students reading. For example, on Pinterest I found Reading Bingo. Basically, it is like a Bingo game, but each square has a different reading and or writing activity.  Hopefully you can view a few of the ideas below.</title>

         <title>Another&amp;nbsp;idea&amp;nbsp;that&amp;nbsp;I&amp;nbsp;think&amp;nbsp;is great,&amp;nbsp;is&amp;nbsp;to&amp;nbsp;let&amp;nbsp;the&amp;nbsp;class discuss&amp;nbsp;a&amp;nbsp;goal&amp;nbsp;for&amp;nbsp;the amount&amp;nbsp;of&amp;nbsp;books&amp;nbsp;they would&amp;nbsp;like&amp;nbsp;to&amp;nbsp;read&amp;nbsp;each&amp;nbsp;9 weeks&amp;nbsp;and&amp;nbsp;give&amp;nbsp;them options&amp;nbsp;of&amp;nbsp;a&amp;nbsp;treat&amp;nbsp;for reaching&amp;nbsp;the&amp;nbsp;goal.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;For example,&amp;nbsp;if&amp;nbsp;the&amp;nbsp;class&amp;nbsp;votes as&amp;nbsp;a&amp;nbsp;whole&amp;nbsp;that&amp;nbsp;they&amp;nbsp;should read&amp;nbsp;20&amp;nbsp;books&amp;nbsp;altogether each&amp;nbsp;9&amp;nbsp;weeks,&amp;nbsp;they&amp;nbsp;get&amp;nbsp;to choose&amp;nbsp;from&amp;nbsp;a&amp;nbsp;popcorn&amp;nbsp;and movie&amp;nbsp;party,&amp;nbsp;a&amp;nbsp;pizza party,&amp;nbsp;or&amp;nbsp;an&amp;nbsp;extra&amp;nbsp;recess.</title>

Often times, they get so caught up in the game or adventure they are on, they forget they are fine-tuning those reading skills. One of the best ways to do this is through an app! This is also beneficial to your technology loving learners. There are several Ipad apps out there that provide challenges and adventures through reading content. Two of my favorite are Star Walk and Geo Walk.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Bring a pup into the equation. As crazy as it might sound, it actually works. This is a very unique way to motivate readers. A professional will bring in a therapy dog and students are allowed time to sit with the dog as long as they are reading to the dog! I've seen it myself at the CALS Library. On Thursdays they bring in 2-3 therapy dogs and it is amazing how many children will line up to "read" to the dogs. Even my son who is in Pre-K will pretend to read pages and read his sight words when he is with the dogs.&nbsp;<br>Jalynn McColey </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This is an activity I came up with that I may use in my class one day.&nbsp; I just let my imagination run a little bit. &nbsp;<br><br>As a teacher, have your students start out each class with 10 minutes of reading from whatever favorite book they chose.&nbsp; (With your approval of course, reading Facebook posts doesn't count.)&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><br>&nbsp;On Fridays go a little farther in class with an activity instead of reading.&nbsp; Allow for about 10 or 15 minutes for the activity.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><br>&nbsp;Pick one student who will be the director.&nbsp; They will chose a page from the current book they are reading, or a page they have already finished (they can have a page in mind in case they're chosen).&nbsp; They when then cast their actors among their classmates for the different roles from their page.&nbsp; (Could be dialogue or just imaginary or informational that the students will act out.)&nbsp;<br><br>&nbsp;Copy pages of the book for the actors to read.&nbsp; Let the director set up the scene.&nbsp; Let the actors begin.&nbsp;<br><br>&nbsp;When the acting is finished have the director explain about the scene.&nbsp; What is the setting?&nbsp; What were the emotions like for each character?&nbsp; How did they get to this point?&nbsp;<br><br>&nbsp;Use this to encourage kids the fullness of reading.&nbsp; There are so many wonderful details in a book that movies will never be able to portray.&nbsp; Hopefully this will also encourage kids to explore different books.&nbsp; Maybe they will see a scene or scenario that will interest them in a particular book.&nbsp; Also, this may help with using imagination while reading.&nbsp; When you read a book, you are the director.&nbsp; You paint the picture yourself for how everything will look in a book.&nbsp; This is one of the best things about reading a new book.<br><br>Sorry this was so long!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I was recently introduced to a school that was using breakout EDU. It is escape room scenarios that are tailored to different subject areas. You could use a book that the class or group is reading as a whole to create a breakout room. The students would have to piece together words and context clues forcing them to work on comprehension, also. I think this would motivate readers while keeping them engaged and interested in the materials. It may even keep their interest on a topic they are particularly crazy to read.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

They can pick a favorite character, chapter, or event in the book. The student can present in various ways. They can act out the event they want to share. They can draw their favorite character. Little surprises at the end of every book give kids a perk they can expect at the end of the tutoring. This create the tutoring to be something fun and they also want to see the surprise. Students will not receive a grade for participating, and participation is not required. In this bingo reading game students get to choose which of he suggested reading activities they want to do. Once they have completed it, they can color in the square. Then students will keep a reading log of books they have read, since book titles may only be used once per card. It is more of an advertisement or a commercial of the book.          <description><![CDATA[<div>A huge way to motivate a reader is to get to know them and find out their interests. Use books about their hobbies and interests. If a child enjoys sports, maybe get a book about their favorite sport or athlete. If a child enjoys a certain series see if you can get the next book they need. So on and so on. No one is opposed to reading, everyone is glued to their phones or other device reading what interests them, it's just finding those for students and plugging them in. <br><br>Speaking of devices. Every student now has a way to play games or use apps. Using this to our advantage could be HUGE. If a student thinks they are playing a game and not reading they will be more motivated to read. Most of these apps have "Levels" so students try to compete to "pass the game".          <description><![CDATA[<div>Sounds simple?  That's because it is.  It is very important for students to read especially in a social studies classroom.  That is the subject I love so much and teach.  As I watch the video connected at the end of this post, I was even hooked on the idea.  It is hard to get students to read but specifically boys.  But they seem to like to read if they can look at pictures while doing it.  Especially if it looks like a video game on paper.  So, the idea is to pretty much find graphic novels that have something to do with the subject you are covering for the content and give them a graphic novel over it and watch them enjoy the topic more even if it's something they don't particularly like in class.  It's all so perfect for both the teacher and the student.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>As a kid, heck as an adult, I love theme parks.&nbsp; I am a 280 pound man, but giggle like a 10 year old girl when I ride a roller coaster. &nbsp; Read to Succeed is an exciting program that encourages students in grades K through 6 to read for fun. Students who complete six hours of recreational reading earn a free ticket to Six Flags! The program is available to teachers and schools at no cost to participate, and it's a great way to motivate kids to read.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I remember in elementary and middle school being very limited on what books I was allowed to read. The teacher gave each student a grade level range they had to stay within. In second grade I loved the Junie B. Jones series but was not allowed to check them out of the library because it was below my allowed range. This took the fun out of reading because I wasn't being allowed to read what I wanted. I believe students should be allowed to read what interests them. If a student is reading books not within their range, help that student make a better choice based on built rapport. Students need to have some control over what they are reading on their own. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>One of the most memorable strategy my teacher used was incorporating class reading material into other areas. For example, we were reading a novel about a character named Dogzilla and were asked to try and solve Dogzilla's problem by creating a simple machine in science class. The project sparked interest in the novel because the class was anxious to learn how Dogzilla solved the problem and compare it to their own solution. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Gamification refers to using game principles (as in video games, board games, etc.) to enhance education or productivity. A great example of gamification that many will be familiar with is the Accelerated Reader program. Habitica.com is a free and customizable tool that uses gamification to encourage good habits. Teachers and students can work together to brainstorm habits, such as 15 minutes of daily reading and 10 minutes of daily journalism.          <description><![CDATA[<div>This strategy for motivating readers works on two levels. As a reward for reading in school, students have their picture placed on the “Got Caught Reading Wall.” Additionally, the wall promotes a school culture that values reading. This is a great strategy for motivating reading in middle school and can be easily implemented.          <description><![CDATA[<div>It seems that more and more books are being made into movies.  Students can use the attached sheets to rate the book and the movie.  I know that I was never interested in the Twilight series until I watched the movie.  I enjoyed the Harry Potter books much more than the book.  The movies are for all ages, Diary of the Wimpy Kid, Middle School the Worst Years of my Life, Holes, and the list goes on.  I recommend popcorn and a drink when viewing the movie.   </div>]]></description>
