I am a massive perfectionist. Perfectionism has been something that's become engrained in my sense of being; my attention to detail and how much I value quality is something that I - and others - proudly identify me by. However, my long-held perfectionism has created several negative repercussions that now dominate my life. Academically, though the quality of my completed work is usually always high, it's caused me to fall behind with my work. I now have mountains of overdue work from months ago that I've yet to complete, and all of this is coming back to bite me as I attempt to prepare for my GCSE mocks. I've also always had a very unhealthy lifestyle, which this perfectionism has largely fueled, and I sleep three to five hours per night; this is also detrimental physically. Combined with intense devotion to extracurricular activities and the high standards I hold myself to in that vein as well, I've burned out as a result. My grades have dropped. I'm now barely scraping by. I'm tired all the time. I fall asleep on the sofa almost every day after school ends. Because of this, I also have a hard time focusing and concentrating on my schoolwork, and when I'm in those 'limbo' phases, time flies by and I'm not able to do anything. Mentally, I've also developed a mindset where I now push off all my work when I'm tired because I know that I won't be able to produce high-quality work when I'm in that state, so I end up cramming in all my work at night. But because of this limited time I have, I barely get anything done. And my teachers have noticed. They're now worried. They've seen how well I've performed previously and how much effort I put into my work, but I'm now failing to deliver. My Head of House is concerned. He knows I'm burning out, and he's putting all his effort into helping me, but I keep rejecting his suggestions by continuing with my perfectionist behaviours. He's booked appointments with the counsellor for me to allow me to receive professional help, but - though I know that this is completely counterproductive - I've so far brushed off this advice because it's become monotonous, though every person I've talked to has suggested the same thing (which I know means that that's the path I should take, but I'm stubborn like that). My parents have also always been concerned. They've already been chiding me for years and have continuously tried to help me fix my sleep schedule by placing bedtime limits and setting hard time limits for the tasks I have to do, but I always 'rebel' against this and go past the time limits - in fact, I now sneak my phone into bed at night and continue working there, so my eyesight is also worsening. This definitely isn't sustainable. But it's something I don't want to change. I value quality too much. I know it's unhealthy and and I know that it's significantly harming both my mental health and my grades, but seeing the good work I produce makes me proud and convinces me that I'm capable of great things (though my horrible time management clearly suggests otherwise). Plus, because others identify me by my high-quality work, there's almost a social expectation that causes me to heighten my own already-high standards and expectations.
