AI Tool Chosen: Duolingo

Learning Objective:

Language Skill: Speaking

Topic: Vocabulary related to everyday objects (e.g. table, chair, telephone, etc.)

Goal: Students will be able to correctly pronounce and use in simple sentences vocabulary related to common objects in everyday situations.

Activity Structure:

Introduction:

It is based on improving speaking skills through the topic: common objects that we use in our daily lives, such as (e.g. “chair,” “table,” “telephone,” “book”). These objects are part of our everyday environment, and talking about them is a great way to practice vocabulary, grammar, and fluency. In addition, it will help us learn how to describe things, express opinions, and make comparisons in English. The main focus of the activity will be to correctly “talk” about these objects, paying special attention to pronunciation and usage in simple sentences.

Duolingo can help practice pronunciation and speaking fluency by allowing students to hear and repeat words and phrases in an interactive context.

Instructions:

- Step 1: Students should access Duolingo and look for the vocabulary lesson that includes common objects (under the “Basic” or “Objects” category).

- Step 2: They will listen to and repeat aloud the words for objects such as “chair,” “telephone,” “table,” etc., paying attention to correct pronunciation.

- Step 3: In each lesson, they should practice using Duolingo’s speaking repetition exercises, where the system will ask them to repeat the words and phrases out loud.

- Step 4: They will complete a series of interactive exercises where they have to speak using the vocabulary words in complete sentences (for example, “This is a chair”), or in sentences with descriptions.

- Step 5: After completing the lesson, they will review their results to see how they can improve their pronunciation and fluency, receiving instant feedback from Duolingo on the quality of their pronunciation.

Practice:

- Listening and Repeating Exercise: Duolingo will give them the opportunity to listen to a sentence containing a vocabulary item and then repeat it out loud.

- Speaking Exercise: Students must describe pictures containing common items (for example, a picture of a chair) and say a sentence like “This is a chair.”

- Role-playing Exercise: Students will practice in pairs engaging in basic conversation, through Duolingo’s recording feature, describing everyday situations in which they use the items (for example, “I’m going to sit on the chair”).

Feedback:

- Immediate Feedback: Duolingo provides immediate feedback on pronunciation using a voice recognition system. If pronunciation is incorrect, students receive suggestions for improvement.

- Review of Results: At the end of the lesson, students can review the words they found difficult to pronounce and practice further with additional exercises.

Content Development:

Exercise 1:

- Listen and Repeat:

- Audio: “This is a chair.”

- Task: Students must listen to the sentence and repeat it correctly out loud. Duolingo will check the pronunciation.

Exercise 2:

- Oral Production:

- Picture: A picture of a table and a chair.

- Task: Students must say a sentence describing what they see (for example, “In the picture there is a table and a chair”).

Exercise 3:

- Role-Play:

- Situation: Students will imagine that they are in a furniture store.

- Task: Using object vocabulary, students must say sentences like “How much does this chair cost?” or “I like this table.”

Multimedia Element:

- Pictures: Include pictures of common objects such as table, chair, telephone, book, etc.

- Audio: Record the correct pronunciation of the words so that students can listen and repeat.
