Internet influence

The moment arose in class, while a discussion about the influence of the internet was taking place. Various perspectives and views were spoken on the subject as groups were formed in order to produce a valuable response concerning the internet as a force of good and bad. Persona A presented a view that the internet acts as a force of good as it is valuable in the business community enabling it to complete wire transaction though it. Similarly, another idea was presented in favor of the view that the internet influence is positive as it allows world wide communication within society. Although, persona A raised a valid point, I didn't feel surprised with that point as I truly believe that it is helpful doing wire transactions. Therefore, my immediate reaction was positive and made me consider why the internet has a positive influence. Shortly after, I began to consider some negative aspects which I came across by. People may come across theft through the internet, as enabling your personal data, information and funds can lead to such. Their point of view differs from my own as they might have trusted the source of wire transactions and had a positive outcome and thus a positive influence on them has occurred. As well as, their actions could have been limited in that sphere and their invested funds were secured correctly. However, myself having dealt with complex funds, that aspect of the internet had a negative impact on me as I have gained knowledge of possible dangers when completing a wire transaction. The benefit of seeing wire transactions as presented by Persona A, is that people will continue to trust and use such a tool on the internet, and perhaps the increased demand will encourage a more increased security. I truly believe there isn't one perspective which is better than the other one, but both my view and the view of the Persona A produce a more general knowledge and awareness on the subject of the internet influence in such a sphere. From their perspective I learned that progress in that sphere can grow with demand and thus, it is important to continue using methods such as wire transactions while being cautious about the dangers of it. Ultimately, the internet simultaneously has both a positive and a negative influence on people today.

This is a good start. Did you listen to the recording or you described the discussion in your breakout group before we all joined together? If this is the case you should say it. Which side of the debate were you on, i.e. what was your group's position? Did this clash with your own personal position? If so how did it make you feel. You should refer to these to expand and strengthen your reflection.

Hi Kai,Please copy paste your second reflection into this padlet. Re the second reflection, an interesting topic and value to describe. Why do you think some of your female classmates had the opinion you described? What is it based on? Could you argue that it stems from the societies they came from, patriarchal and conservative ones. This task is intrinsically about your values but would be interesting to reflect on this too. You could expand more on the position of women in Israel. Does the equality you speak of refer to all the citizens and all the groups in the country?

Reflection task 3

The debate in week 6 was about what is the most urgent issue in the global community.

We where offered the following five propositions:

A. Nuclear weapons

B. Pandemics like COVID 19

C. Artificial Intelligence

D. Climate change (global warming)

E. Lack of fresh water.

The class voted on what they thought the most urgent threat was and most of the class voted climate change.

The class then broke into groups to discuss each of the threats and then regrouped to present the issues and their views.

Unfortunately, I was not able to attend this class as I was in competitions, there for I couldn’t contribute to the debate.

However, this issue is very interesting and the views presented by students from all over the world are extremely interesting because I realize that while we all come from different places all over the globe and from different communities, who have different local problems, we all share the same worries about global threats, even though sometimes from different angles.

Obviously, my actions (lack of actions) and opinions did not have any impact on the other students because I was not present – which is different than if I was there and did not state an opinion. If I was there and just didn’t state an opinion, it could have been interpreted either as if I did not have an opinion on the subject or that I completely agreed with everything that was said.

Other students’ opinions had an impact on me. As said before, the biggest impact was realizing that we all share the same concerns relating to global threats, without regard to which country or community we come from. This was a positive impact on me, because if these concerns are universally shared, it gives me more hope that the threats will be addressed and hopefully, to the extent possible, solved or at least improved. The students in the class, just like me, are the young generation of people from all over the world, and it is on us to start working on solving the threats to the global community.

The biggest impact on me came from the discussion on the threat from nuclear weapons. First, it was interesting to hear views of students from other countries (such as India and Ukraine) that also, like myself, live in countries that in a sense, are dealing the threat on daily basis. It actually made me think deeper, for example, on the issue of “do we trust the leaders – of other countries and of our own – to not push the button`’. I always had full trust that at least the leaders of Israel, which is a nuclear power country, would never actually use it. But the Nadia’s comment, “`I cannot trust the discretion of one person or another”, made me re-think the issue. Also, for example, I was deeply impacted by hearing the view of the student from Ukraine, who actually lived through the suffering of the results of the Chernobyl nuclear spill. For the first time I came to think about an angle I never thought of before – what can happen if something like this occurs in Israel? Is the benefit of having the deterring effect of being a nuclear power worth the risks to the citizens of my country.

My reflection on the communities I belong to, especially coming out of the global threats discussion, is that first of all, I am a “citizen of the world” which means I should be active in responding to global threats. Part of being a citizen of the world, is my belonging to the Regents’ school community which is a very international community. After that, I am of course a citizen of my country – Israel, which I feel very connected to and always try to be active in its issues – from political to social. Going from there, I belong to many communities, such as my family, my friends’ circle, my horse-competitions community, etc.. I try to be involved an responsible in each of them.

I would like to reflect on the question raised in class whether it should be a crime not to promote a woman who may get pregnant in the near future. To me this question relates completely to the issue of sexual discrimination, because not promoting a woman because she may get pregnant, is in my opinion discriminating her based on her sex, and not on any other ground – there is no evidence that if a woman gets pregnant or is a mother to a baby she cannot do her job just as well as any other person. If she deserves a promotion – she should get it, and her personal status should not matter at all and the laws should protect that.I was surprised to hear females in my class say that a woman who will get pregnant in the near futures should not get a promotion or should get it only after she comes back from maternity leave. I think such a view is wrong generally, but coming from females it is even more surprising and troubling – they should be the first ones to fight against any sexual discrimination and to know that being a woman or being pregnant or having a young child at home does not make you less capable to do your job and not deserving of a promotion. The underlying value supporting my view is the broad value of equality to all people, and the morenarrow value – equality between the sexes. My strong opinion on equality between the sexes comes first from the house I grew in – my mother is a career woman, very successful in what she is doing, and I saw her managing her career very well while being pregnant, having 3 children and being a full time mommy at the same time. Also, the society I grew in is a very liberal society (in most of the country) where women are treated equally and you can see them in high positions in business, corporations and politics. This is the environment I grew up in and I think this shaped my opinion on the issue

Despite you not attending the webinar this is a well written and engaged entry. Being a nuclear power, Israel, and I presume Israelis have a particular relationship with this issue. You could expand on that. In your opinion is it necessary for Israel to have a nuclear arsenal, etc? You list communities you belong to but stay short of explaining your engagement in them. Good work. However, going forward not being able to take part in webinars and contribute will seriously impact your work and your grade. I understand that you have competitions, but hopefully not all the classes will be written off.

My initiative is a water treatment system 100% eco-friendly and solar powered that treats water from any source (i.e, rivers, oceans, ponds). The system uses technologies known for purifiying undrinkable water, converting it into drinking water – but all this without the need for electricity, but rather by use of solar energy .

The system is built from modules that can be expanded to any size, to treat and supply water for a single house a hotel and even a full village. No power supply is necessary (powered by solar energy) and therefore it can be utilized in any location, and is especially important for communities in remote places that are not connected to the electricity or water grid.

My initiative relates directly to Goal No. 6 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, titled “Clean Water and Sanitation”. This Goal comes to “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”. I believe that the initiative fits right into this Goal.

2.	I contributed to the group project by talking to various people in Israel who are engaged in the High-tech/Startup community and specifically in the Cleantech and sustainable products fields. I presented the challenge we were given to them and together we searched for initiatives which might be interesting for the project. Israel is very advanced in technologies relating to water purification and also in the solar energy field and from there we searched together for an initiative that will have an impact on the global community and more so on communities who suffer from lack of clean water. I then discussed the idea with my group, and we put together the slides for the initiative in a form we were advised is fitting for a technological initiative presentation.	Since I am interested in entrepreneurship, this project feels like the first baby step towards my future and career as an entrepreneur – that is, From sitting with people who understand in the field and have taken steps as startup founders and brainstorming with them, through narrowing down to what I was interested in – that is, something that has an effect on the global community, all the way to thinking the project through with my team in a team effort and to writing down the slides for the project. I feel strongly that sustainability initiatives are critical to the future of our plant no matter which community we come from or live in, therefore, the combination of doing a project that is a “startup like” that also ties into sustainability is definitely important for me no matter where my career takes me

The module parts I found most interesting were the sessions that dealt with taking an initiative relating to major issues facing the global community as expressed through the UN Sustainable Development Goals. They were very interesting since I am concerned with the issues facing the global community, as I consider myself a “citizen of the world” not just a member of my community or country. The sessions were also interesting for me because through the task I actually faced for the first time the steps of an entrepreneur – from thinking about a problem, through thinking about a solution idea, all the way to putting it into a presentation. I also found Week 8 session – main environment problems in countries of my colleague students interesting. I learned that no matter where you come from, environmental problems concern us all. The part I found less useful was Week 4 relating to political and other ethical issues. I think the issues presented were quite obvious and not really challenging unless you are an extremist and that’s why we did not really hear a diversity of opinions.

The main things I learned from this module were how to research topics sometimes on a very short basis, how to summarize my arguments concisely and share them in writing “on the spot”. I also learned how to interact effectively with my groups via the media and present a group view on topics – things I have not done before. I also learned that on many issues, while I have an instantaneous opinion, I can also make good arguments for the other side – thus, there is always room for listening to other opinions and weighing their validity (for example, the AI issue – I only saw its benefits, but after class I could also see and appreciate the downsides). I also learned how people’s perspectives on things differ based on where they come from and their upbringing values.

I will apply these learnings to my degree disciple because after this course, I will look at issues from a wider angle, trying to see other people’s perspectives relating them to their values and upbringings. This will help me in my future career as an international entrepreneur, because I will know to approach people more wisely by trying to think how they will react to things I present or bring to the table taking into account their culture and values.

Reflecting on my performance in the course I can clearly state that I would have benefited more from the module and would have also succeeded more in my tasks had I been present in all the “live” classes, rather than reviewing various of the classes in the recorded format. Being present in all classes in “real time” would enable me to address the interesting issues along with my colleagues and to brain-storm, allowing me to respond to points raised by my colleagues, and allowing them to respond to points raised by me, thereby getting someone else’s perspective on my thoughts. Reviewing classes on the recorded format made me a “passive” part of the class which is a disadvantage. My taking from this is that I need to be able to manage my time so that my other activities as a professional sportsman and my work will not deprive me of improving and reaching my best as a learner.
