What are music conventions?

Music conventions are used in order to portray the genre of a music video. The conventions along with the genre also help the artist structure their music video.

General conventions like lyrics of a song influence what's shown in the video, establishing a general mood of subject instead of a meaning. Camera, Editing and Mise-en-scene also affect this, but editing affects the pace of the music and costumes reflect the mood.

There are various conventions used in this music video. The genre is Indie and considering The Killers are an Indie band, they have common generic signifiers.

For their song Somebody Told Me, the generic signifiers used are:

- Live performances
- Close ups of the lead singer
- Wide shot of the group as a whole
- Individual of each member playing an instrument.

Music Video's can also be categorised based on the style rather than the form and conventions. Performance, Narrative, Mixture, Cameo, Abstract / Animation all come under the different kind of styles.

- Performance - Consists mainly of the artists performing in the video (isn't exactly common/popular as target audiences can't engage with the song or the video but it's a perfect example to display the performance, costume and lighting in a creative way to make it more interesting.)
- Narrative - follows a story line (two types, one type being linear narrative and the other a fragmented narrative)
- Linear Narrative: Starts the story at the beginning, going through to the middle and ends at the end
- Fragmented Narrative: Doesn't follow a certain order
- Mixture - Combination of performance and narrative which is usually found in music videos.
- Cameo - Band/Artist features in the narrative but doesn't perform.

In a music video, the shots are varied depending on the style and genre of the music. Generally, close ups and wide shots are used to first show the lead singer and then the group as a whole, following with shots of each individual member playing an instrument.

Some examples of shots/movement used in Music Videos are:
- Low angles
- Long Shots
- Pans / Tilts
- Tracking

Editing a music video also varies alongside camerawork. Usually in a music video, jump cuts are often used. However, footage is edited to match the music.

Examples of techniques for editing are:
- Split Screens
- Diegetic sound
- Non-diegetic
- Change in the levels / pitch of the sound

Mise-en-scene also depends on the genre and the type of the music video. There's no general convention for Mise-en-scene as every Music Video's concept is completely different from the other

However, examples of mise-en-scene used in Music Videos remain the same in almost all videos:
- Props (performance equipment, especially for bands)
- Costumes - certain outfits for certain performances
- Locations
- Facial expressions / performance

In addition, in a Music Video there's many kinds of forms the clip may be viewed in. It could be a narrative clip (i.e. containing a visual story that's easy to follow), an art clip (contains no perceptible visual narrative), a performance clip (the most commonly used clip, in which shows the vocalist(s) in one or more setting. Can be of three types; song performance, dance performance or instrumental performance.) and lastly there's an abstract form type of clip. (Basically repetition of image in the music video. Organised around 'theme and variation')
