The development of addition is not documented because it is thought to be essentially prehistoric. The oldest written records of calculation date back to the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians (Addition and Subtraction History, 2010). The addition symbol is credited to the fourteenth and fifteenth century mathematicians. The first of the two was Nicole d’ Oresme, a French man (1323-1382). He used the plus “+” symbol to abbreviate the Latin “et”, meaning “and” in “Algorismus Proportionum.” Then in 1489 the plus and the minus symbols were printed in a Johannes Widmann’s “Mercantile Arithmetic,” (Gallant, n.d.)
