What are the characteristics that science fiction/ dystopian/ utopian literature share? Why have sci-fi and dystopian fiction become almost synonymous?

Dystopian novels started off written primarily for adults, but this genre exploded for young adult literature while adult literature has moved away from it. Why do you think this is the case? Many adults read this genre in young adult literature but why do you think it is not as popular in adult literature?

They wish that they could experience that rebellion and self-government in their actual lives, but because they can't they turn to dystopian books and movies.

In many of the science fiction/dystopian novels there is a leadership group that knows something or keeps the "secret"? Which would be the better type of leadership: all democratic everyone knows all information? Group of leaders: secrets kept are imperative? Explain.

Why do so many of us like dystopian stories/movies? Why did so many of us go home and watch The 100?

So many of us like dystopian stories because in real life we are restricted by rules, and in dystopian stories we live out the free life's we wish we had. They are exciting because we feel like we're one of the characters and experience the same feeling they get without acting out and facing the consequences in real life. In today's age many kids have turned from paper books toward technology. Many may have gone home to watch the 100 because it's "easier" and more convenient than reading an actual book while still getting the same experience you would as if you had read.
