I learned that external backpacks have lot of outside pouches. Internal backpacks have usually almost no external pouches.

This source is useful because it teaches about backpack design. It has a container at the side that is made out of metal and it will keep  the water at a chilly temperature for the  hot, dry days you spend in the desert. Also, it is light weight and can help get you to your destination in no time, The container (without water in it) adds almost no weight to the backpack. It will keep the sand out of the water by being sealed tightly, and it won´t spill very easily.
