The artificial heart was invented by a scientist from the Netherlands, Dr. Kloff. It was not until 1981 when an artificial heart would be implanted into a human being, whom lives 121 days off of this. In 2004, the CardioWest is transplanted into patients and is finally successful with FDA approval.
Source: http://www.syncardia.com/

When implanted, the device replaces the ventricles to continue blood flow either to the lungs or to the body; also connected to the atria's. The device restores natural blood flow; meanwhile, the artificial heart is connected outside of the body to a console , which can be in a backpack weighing up to 14 pounds. The recipient has to charge the batteries continuously to keep normal heart beat.
