The book Opening the Road: Victor Hugo Green and his Green Book by Keila Dawson shows the creation and popularity of the green book by Victor Hugo green. This book was a safe guide for African Americans to know where black owned establishments were located in New York City during segregation. The original book for New York City was created in 1936 and eventually expanded to many states across the USA. The Green book gained so much popularity that it became an “official Negro travel guide” by the United States government.

Dawson, K. V., & Harris, A. (2021).

The “Opening the road: Victor Hugo Green and his Green book” is a Jane Addams Children’s Book Award finalist. This award recognizes books that promote peace, social justice, world community, and equality. According to An Analysis of the Jane Addams Award | Colabucci and Napoli the list of JACBA criteria involved “overcoming prejudice, breaking cycles of fear, understanding human needs with compassion”. The Green Book definitely meets all of the criteria for this award. The book was a guide for African Americans to break any cycle of fear during segregation and know where they can travel and go safely. This was a human need for African Americans during the Jim Crow Laws.

https://www.janeaddamschildrensbookaward.org/about/mission-values-vision/
Lesley Colabucci & Mary Napoli (2017) An analysis of the Jane Addams Children's Book Award.
