John the Baptist was the prophet who knew of Christs coming, for a lot of Christians, baptism occurs a few days after birth, although some adults are also baptized. The water symbolizes the spiritual purification and cleansing. The Orthodox Christians immerses the baby in the water, while the Romans sprinkle it over the baby's head. The Godparents are required to attend the ceremony. The godparents agree to be responsible for the child's religion. They also give the baby a christening, meaning they give the baby a Christian name as a sign of admission to the Christian church.
