Scout shows courage in the expression, “I would fight anyone from a third cousin upwards tooth and nail”. She loves her family and is willing to protect them no matter what.

Racial prejudice is present when Mrs. Dubose says: “Not only a Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawing for niggers!”

Jem shows justice when he says, “I reckon if he’d wanted us to know it, he’da told us. If he was proud of it, he’da told us.” He respects his father´s decision and convinces his sister to do the same. He admires his father and wants to be like him in the expression “Atticus is a gentleman, just like me!”

Pg 53

Atticus represents justice when he says to Jem: “to do something like this to a sick old lady is inexcusable. I strongly advise you to go down and have a talk with Mrs. Dubose”. Even if Mrs. Dubose shouldn´t said those comments about him to his children, Atticus tells Jem to apologize, showing fairness and justice above people´s opinion about him.

I´m intrigued of what is going to happen to Mrs. Dubose. Why does she have fists around the same time every day? Pg 58

I am really wondering if "mockingbird" actually is a symbol or does it represent a character in the book?

I want to know what is Atticus´ past. Most people from the town apparently know it, as this segment shows, but Atticus does not want his son and daughter to know. I want to know why. 

One can see how Atticus shows Justice in everything he says and does. He really believes in justice and he would do anything even if it is a minimal thing, to help even a stranger.

Also, Mrs. Dubose doesn't filter what she says and she said something very offending about Atticus and how he has gone off Finch's comfort zone about defending Negroes.

Where were they standing when they shot the dog?

I am getting this strange feeling about the situation with the dog. Everyone seems threatened by the 'crazy dog' when in reality the dog is just looking for a place to die. It does not feel that they are planning to shoot him because they want to take the dog out of his misery, it feels like they are doing it because the dog will do something evil.

Chapter 10

I´m intrigued to know how the book got the name “How to Kill a Mockingbird”, especially after Atticus tells Scout “I´d rather you shot tin cans in the back yard, but I know you´ll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ´em, but remember it´s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (pg. 90)

Why would she be ashamed that her father can play the Jew´s Harp? (91)

I never would have thought that Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict.

I feel this quote is very important to the book. They are talking about mockingbirds, birds that are good and innocent. This must have some kind of symbolism that will be discovered later on the book. I'm intrigued to know if this quote will later on help us understand the name of the book.

This quote shows justice because he believes Tom Robinson deserves to be helped. He doesn't care whether Tom Robinson is black, he wants to do the right thing. This quote also shows courage because it is corageous of Atticus to defend a negro during that time, where racial prejudice is a big thing.

"Hush, Heck" said Atticus.

I'm intrigued to know what Mr. Tate was going to say about Atticus. What secret is he hiding? I want to know more about Atticus because eI think he is a very interesting character. We don't really know much about Atticus's childhood. I'm intrigued in his character and I want to know more about him.

The dog is sick, why is everyone going nuts over him? Pg: 123

Jem finally gave into his rage of people insulting Atticus (prejudice) by cutting the camellia bushes. Pg:

I think that author meant that black people like a mockingbird - never did something bad against us. So, it is kind a sin to kill a black person, just because he is black.
