1)criminals were sold by chiefs or kings as punishment

2)free Africans were captured during raids by African and European, eventually leading to enslavement. 

3)domestic slaves were resold to the European merchants

4)prisoners of war of the African kingdoms were sold on to the European

Enslavement became a major byproduct of war in Africa. African Kingdoms and tribes would be deliberately sponsored by a European nation – it would choose a favorite side to win between two African societies at war and supply that side with firearms and weapons. The victorious side captures the captives from the other side, who were given to the Europeans to pay for the arms and exchanged for more guns or other barter, such as liquor. The trading network of slaves from the Western African coast to northern, central and southern America is called the-Transatlantic Slave Trade. The Portuguese were the first regularly to ship enslaved Africans across the Atlantic, some can say-establishing the slave trading system. The Portuguese held a near-monopoly of the Transatlantic slave trade during the sixteenth century, supplying its colony-Brazil with labor needed. In the 1630s, however, the Dutch seized control, in 1629 to 1636, of Portuguese territories in northeast Brazil and in 1637 to 1641 of their ports of Elmina and Luanda in Africa. Which lead to the permanent involvement in the Atlantic slave trade by the Dutch.
British, in the surging demand for slaves within their own Caribbean colonies after 1645, had forged by 1670 an entry into the African trade sufficiently large to enable them to go on and dominate the international slave trade during the following 140 years. Enslavement became a major byproduct of war in Africa, which Africans were captured and sold by other African kingdoms or tribes to the Arabic/European merchants, those who will transport the slaves to the Caribbean, North America or South America.

The European ships, after trading their manufactured goods for the slaves, transported the slaves, African men, women, and children, to the Americas Traders referred to the Africa-Americas part of the voyage as the " Middle Passage" of the Triangle Trade network, The dreadful Middle Passage could last from one to three months and epitomized the role of violence in the trade. Based on regulations, ships could transport only about 350 people, but some carried more than 800 men, women, and children. Branded, stripped naked for the duration of the voyage, lying down amidst filth, enduring almost unbearable heat, compelled by the lash to dance on deck to straighten their limbs, all captives went through a frightening, incredibly brutal and dehumanizing experience. Well over 30,000 voyages from Africa to the Americas have been documented. After the slaves were transported to the Americas colonies (the harsh environment on the ship with diseases will kill a portion of the slave before the ship even reaches the American colonies) The slaves will then be sent to slave markets to sell, in most of the situations, the sell is done in auction form.

The negative impacts includes dramatic population loss of the southern Sahara region of Africa. There were over 1200 million Africans enslaved and sold to the Europeans by the coastal African kingdoms, which resulted in the loss of African culture and labor force.
