What are the types of parenting style and their dimensions? What are the implications for children with regards to the various parenting styles?


1)Authoritarian style
Hostile towards the child, harsh and rigid in their discipline, use of power assertive methods such as  verbal abuse
Impact on the child: the child may be fearful of their home and become anti-social, mistrustful of others, have low social competence and self-reliance compared to others, and may cause mental health.

2)Uninvolved Parenting Style
Allow children to learn from their own experiences of neglectful and focus on their own needs.
Children who are raised up with uninvolved parenting may lead the children finding hard to form and sustain relationships with others.


3)Permissive Parenting Style is a mix of authoritarian and uninvolved parenting
Inconsistent with their behaviour, sometimes may be harsh or neglectful which confuses the child.
The amount of freedom can cause uncontrollable and impulsive behaviour. The child may find it hard to pacify and more immature than other peers.


4)Authoritative Parenting Style
Positiv listen to children's points of view and take them into account.
Allow their children freedom, have consistent rules and boundaries, have a secure environment, a warm and supportive parenting style.

-       Authoritarian is where the parents are aggressive, lacks warmth and comfort, demands obedience and ensures child follows a strict set of rules. 
-       Uninvolved is where the parents have a laid back style and let their child do what they want. 
-       Permissive is where there is a mix of authoritarian and uninvolved parenting styles. 
-       Authoritative is where the parents are responsive and use an involved approach to the child’s well-being. 
 

Authoritarian, uninvolved and permissive parenting styles will lead to negative consequences for the child’s well-being. It is damaging to the children and it will affect their character growth and development.

Authoritative style:
In this parenting style, the parents are nurturing, responsive, and supportive, yet set firm limits for their children. They attempt to control children's behavior by explaining rules, discussing, and reasoning. They listen to a child's viewpoint but don't always accept it.

Children raised with this style tend to be friendly, energetic, cheerful, self-reliant, self-controlled, curious, cooperative and achievement oriented.

Authoritarian style: aggressive, lacks warmth and comfort

This method involves aggressive, lacks warmth and comfort. Parents tend to be hostile towards the child, harsh and rigid in their discipline by abusing verbally or smacking the child. This will cause the child to be fearful of the environment, mistrusts others, have social competence and self-reliance and also have mental issues in the long run. Children will also get fearful of their home environment and their self-reliance are lowered. 

This style is low in parental responsiveness and high in parental demandingness. Authoritarian parents are not very emotional or affectionate, and critical of their children if they fail to meet their expectations. Rules should always be used to conduct behavior that is desired. When a child breaks a rule, it should be an opportunity to teach a life lesson and not be punished because they didn’t follow the rules. Unfortunately, strong punishment leads to more misbehavior, rebellion and results in constant power struggles.

Impact
- Child becomes scared of home environment
- Child mistrust others and low social competence and  self-reliance 
- Child will have mental health issues

Uninvolved Parenting:
- Laid back
- Learn from their own experiences
- Can become neglectful
- Prioritise own needs over child

Impact
- Children will face difficulties in forming n sustaining relationships
- Poorer school achievements
- Higher rates of problem behavior

Permissive Parenting
- Authoritarian + Uninvolved = Permissive Parenting
- Inconsistent 
- Harsh and demanding one day
- Neglectful the next

Impact
- Child gets confused on how to behave
- They became uncontrollable and impulsive
- Hard to pacify and manage
- More immature
- Less likely to take on independent tasks

Authoritative Style
- Unique
- Listen to their POV and take it into account
- Allow freedom with a certain line drawn
- Structured and secured environment
- Set high standards of behavior and achievement for their child
- Warm and supportive to help the child achieve the expectations they set

Impact
- Self-confident
- Socially competent
- High self-esteem
- Good school grades

Authoritarian:  Extremely strict parenting style. High expectations on children with little responsiveness.

Uninvolved : Make few to no demands of their children and often indifferent, dismissive, or even completely neglectful.

Permissive: Not demanding parents. Children do not have many responsibilities and are allowed to regulate behaviours and majority of their choices. When a parent is permissive, they look at their child as equal rather than the children of a parent.

Authoritative: Listen to children's points of view and always considered about them. Set free of their children so that they have freedom.
