  • Estar tranquilo pero actuar rápidamente. Con tranquilidad se da confianza al accidentado y a aquellos que se encuentran cerca.


  • Pensar antes de actuar. Se debe hacer un examen rápido del lugar, intentando conocer si existen heridos ocultos, por ejemplo, debajo de escombros. Hay que cerciorarse de los posibles peligros que aún existan; gases tóxicos, fuego, corriente eléctrica, etc.


  • No mover, como norma básica y elemental porque se pueden empeorar las lesiones. Cuando existan situaciones especiales se movilizará, ejemplo fuego, o cuando sea preciso realizar la maniobra de reanimación cardio-pulmonar.


  • Examinar bien al herido: reconocer la posibilidad de la pérdida de vida. Investigar si está consciente, si respira, si tiene pulso, si sangra, si tiene una fractura, si presenta quemaduras, etc.


  • No hacer más que lo indispensable. Si se intentan hacer demasiadas cosas, se retrasará el traslado de la víctima hacia el puesto de socorro. Los primeros auxilios no tienen por objeto reemplazar al médico. No se harán curas complicadas.


  • Mantener al herido caliente.


  • Tranquilizar al herido, calmar sus temores y levantar el ánimo.


  • Avisar a personal sanitario, pedir ayuda con rapidez, con el fin de instaurar un tratamiento médico lo más rápido posible.


  • Traslado adecuado según las lesiones que presente el accidentado, la posición de espera y traslado variará. A veces es preferible avisar al médico antes de efectuar su transporte.


  • No dar jamás de beber a una persona sin conocimiento, en este estado se puede ahogar con el líquido que se le intente dar.
