The French wanted to cut off supply lines to the Viet Minh and draw them into a major confrontation. However, The Viet Minh occupied the highlands and were defeated by the Vietnamese army. 

This is significant because it broke the reign of French power in Indochina and lead to the independence of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Here Vietnam also agreed to divide their nation at the 17th parallel, hostilities were halted, and the French re-grouped below the 17th parallel.

This is significant because this eventually lead to the creation of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) and marked a turning point in the US involvement in the war by the US helping South Vietnam establish a government and supply funding. Vietnamese torpedo boats. By the end of the second day, Johnson ordered 180,00 men and multiple airstrikes. This drew the US directly into the War.  

The significance of this incident is that this was a major turning point the the United States involvement in Vietnam. The significance of the NLF is that they would later be known for the Tet Offensive and the Attack on the US embassy in Saigon. Their Tet Offensive attack prompted Pres. Enacted on August 10, the joint resolution between Congress and Johnson passed the the Resolution. 

The significance of this event is that it gave President LBJ the authorization (without a formal declaration) to use the military force in Southeast Asia. On January 31, 70,000 military forces attacked over 100 towns/cities in South Vietnam. This was yet another major turning point in the war. 

This event is significant because the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese attacked on purpose with the intent of breaking the alliance between the United States & South Vietnamese. An estimated 500 people were killed. High ranking officials managed to cover up events on that day for a year until a solider who had heard of the massacre, thus leading to a international investigation. 14 crimes were charged, but only one was convicted. 

The significance of this event was just horrific. The length officials went to cover up this event grew and lead to major anti war attitude on the home front, thus having a further divide over American forces in Vietnam.]]> 2017-01-06 03:16:02 UTC https://padlet.com/capozzil/dylhcuivihy0/wish/145624772 January 27, 1973: Paris Peace Accords capozzil https://padlet.com/capozzil/dylhcuivihy0/wish/145625375 On January 27, 1973, the Paris Peace Accords (officially named Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam) was signed to establish Peace and end the War in Vietnam. It ended US combat and temporarily stopped fighting between N and S Vietnam.

The significance of this is event is the end of the war! Our country split right down the middle when we really should have be unifying together. The high concern of wide spread communism and question of how to contain communism rose to a new level and it was the first time as a whole that the US had lost a war.
