A single note is arguably one of the most important elements in the entirety of a song. The definition of a single note is exactly what one would most likely assume. Ratliff does not beat around the bush at all with this one. A single note is a note that, when repeated, gives the song an underlying motive, or a deeper meaning. Emphasis created by single notes can reinforce emotions, may cause emotions to be felt more intensely, or may even have the ability to change the perspective in which one views a song as a whole.

One of the examples Ratliff gave of a single note, was the repetition of a single note that makes up the guitar solo in the song "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones. This is by far one of my favorite songs for this single note repetition, as it emphasizes the overall message of the song that resonates with me. That message is one of exhaustion with life's overbearing monotony and the artists need for some kind of change or sedation. To me, repetitive single notes drive me crazy, more so than continuous ones, so the emphasis of that guitar solo really hits home when coupled with the lyrics of the song, truly embodying everything meant to be conveyed by the artists.

Singular Single Note

As I stated previously, another way a single note can be an extremely impactful element within a song, is the note's ability to change a person's perspective of the song in question. A wonderful example of this resides within the song "Let it Go" from Disney's "Frozen". When one of the main characters, Elsa, sings the word "know" in the phrase "...now they know" in this song, the note changes the song from one of perceived isolation an despair to pride and self-acceptance. This sudden shift of the listener's emotions perfectly embodies this ideal.
