At the start you can tell that Laura doesn't like Jane, then we learn it's because Laura doesn't think Jane could replace her mom who is dead. Laura like rubbing it into jane like salt in wounds. Then when Jane finds the button Jane says that it can't replace a mother and then Laura thinks about it. This is the point when it all comes together. I also think that you shouldn't judge someone even if they are new. these buttons are very important to Laura and her family because they have buttons of important family members. Laura id NOT like Jane at first but after the button incident, they got closer.

So she started talking out loud about something that was very close to her and her mom, so she could try and make the other mom not like her. But by doing so, she broke the string. And that is when we learn that the new mom only wanted to help: The mother was genuinely concerned for the girl. And helped her and the dad pick up the little buttons that were on the string (the important object was a necklace of buttons) and put them somewhere safe. But later, we also learn that the mother cares even MORE for the little girl when she was actually the one to tell the father that it was not a good idea to switch the buttons and look for the real thing.
