The theme/ big idea being conveyed by cisneros is that women are in charge of taking care of the kids and cooking and  staying home instead of getting a job.  Cisneros uses imagery to put the picture of a woman with a baby cooking in your head. She makes it clear that a woman's place is at home cleaning, cooking, and caring for the kids. The big idea she is trying to show to the reader is gender roles, specifically women's.

The theme/big idea being conveyed by cisneros is that women, mostly latina women care a lot about developing hips when you get older. They take developing hips so serious that they compare having hips to getting a new car ready for you to drive and if you never get hips you could turn into  a man. The big idea is that it is very important for latina women to eventually have hips.
