I might be a reading teacher, but I’m not an active reader. I became a reading sped teacher because of my struggles with reading and a form of dyslexia as a young student. Reading without certain modifications/accommodations even today can lead to frustrations, migraines, and being asleep in 15 minutes. BUT I TOTALLY LOVE Words, stories, new information about people, places, cultures, and current events. Reading can take you so many places and engage our minds in so many ways and levels. I still model for my students. I am the model they see who has struggled in reading but still is successful. Reluctant struggling readers find comfort in knowing it’s ok if you read mostly short reads or magazines or articles on one topic and that you don’t have to be a reader at a rate of several books a week and have read the entire fiction section of the library. And my avid readers are praised and encouraged by my unrelenting advocating of how fun reading can be and the places and experiences it can take you on. You can have these experiences whether you read a lot or a little....but you must believe in yourself and the good reading will do for you. I’m not an avid reader but I am an engaged reader.

I like to start just writing for whatever task I have. Then I go back and change things and add things etc. I preferred to free right on whatever the topic is instead of being constrained by an outline that I have to stop and think about. I let my thoughts flow with the conversation in my head and then go back and edit. I will sometimes make an outline if I’ve had the opportunity to think a lot about the task I’m writing about before I get started. Otherwise I really do have several rough draft before I’m done.

There's deliberate writing that I do, such as writing a letter that a student requires, and it's always intentional and tiered to an audience; however, the type of writing I do for myself typically begins at a creative spark. It's sometimes an emotional response, but more often than not, it's tied to deeper thoughts that I have that I feel need the assistance of articulation through writing.

Whether it's creative writing or writing for research or answering a prompt, I love it. Writing is how I can best express myself and who I am, and I feel I am able to get my point across far better in writing than I would ever be able to verbally or any other way. I love that writing allows me to get lost in myself and show people what I want through words.

I am a curious reader. I read loads of non-fiction to answer questions and to discover new information. I love the feeling I have when I learn a new fact or piece of trivia. I savor it and think I never knew I wanted to know that, and I tuck it away to pull out again later at just the right time. I also read to unwind, typically mysteries with a historical setting. This year I have challenged myself to read more young adult novels, things I think my students would be interested in - so I've picked up my first graphic novel. I'm hoping to continue to expand in this way.

What I Read -- C. Higdon

I love reading mysteries and Dystopian novels. I find myself reading more young adult novels lately so that I am current on what they like and know what to add to my classroom library. For example, I recently started reading The Hate You Give. My favorite book is Watership Down by Richard Adams. I can read that book again and again! One of my other favorite genres would be natural disasters and survival stories. If you like that genre, I highly recommend Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson. It is a historical account of the 1900 Galveston Hurricane. Amazing read. I like keeping up with current events as well.

I love writing along with my students. I model everything in front of them so that they see my writing process. From teaching students how to write a response to a short answer question with depth and complete sentences to writing a 26-line essay to any given prompt, to writing a research paper, etc., etc., I model my process. This is one of my favorite things to do as a writer.
