These behaviors are demonstrated the majority of the time through the interaction she has with Darius. An example of her pridefulness is in chapter 4 page 42, “We’re just dancing” she says, rubbing her arm. “No, you’re just dancing, while he’s over here looking at you like you’re a pile of crap” “Excuse me?” Darius says, eyebrows raised. “You’re excused,” I say, side-eyeing him”. In this interaction Zuri believes that Darius is disgusted by her sister and to an extent the residents of Bushwick. Leaving her pride behind is the same as her leaving her comfort zone. This is how the plot and the theme are impacted, this is shown in chapter 28 pages 272- 273 “Pride'' by Zuri Benitez.

Throughout the story one can see the social and economic difference between Zuri and Darius, this is one of the main reasons as to why Zuri and Darius are bashing heads with each other. An example of this can be seen  in chapter 10 page 102 “ But isn’t it a little late? I took mine in the spring ``asks looking towards Kayla as she crossed the street. (talking about SATs) “No. It was okay. Enough to get me into Howard” “Well, I’m trying to get my best score,” he says. “Cause you’re trying to get into Harvard, not Howard, right?” She tells him this because Harvard is a prestigious university, that the majority of those who attend are those of a higher class, this quote is also another example of pride. Later on Darius' grandmother mentions Harvard to Zuri, in chapter 17 page 118(in the online book copy) “But Howard? It’s a long way from Bushwick. And you sound like you have a good head on your soldiers. Why not…Harvard or Georgetown? They should be ways to let us stay in and survive. And thrive.”   Overall the author IbI Zoboi wants the reader to confront our pasts to face our futures by teaching us that things change and we shouldn't be too Proud to let things go.
