I think that Rachel wasn't just silent because tommy, it was because of bad things happen when she talks, or at least she thinks that . I still don't know clearly why Rachel can't talk. I don't know if she can't talk, or if she has nothing to say.

I think Rachel may have done something to Tommy mentaly. I think that the bigger meaning behind this has something to do with flying and her dad because she always reading books about flying and it said that she wants to fly and if she could she would fly to her dad and that is one of the reasons that
