The Moon is slowly moving away from Earth at a rate of about 1.5 inches (3.8 centimeters) per year. This is due to tidal interactions between the Earth and the Moon. Over billions of years, this gradual drift will cause the Moon to appear smaller in the sky and eventually become tidally locked with Earth, always presenting the same face to us.
