They are also resistant to admitting that it is ok to care about others' situation, feelings, perspectives. This seems to have gotten worse, especially with the upsurge of social media.

The goal of this lesson plan is to increase student awareness about empathy, and to show it toward others.

Students will also be able to appreciate the perspectives and points of view of others with various backgrounds.

There is also a plan to share strategies with stakeholders, specifically parents and teachers, on how to teach and model empathy. This is an important component of collaboration and ensuring continuity between school and life outside. Being able to educate both students and stakeholders about empathy and its importance is the beginning of improving school and community culture.

Timing: I think the number of lessons is good. However, having the lessons directly after lunch may have negatively effected the results. I also wonder if conducting the lessons in Oct-December may have also negatively effected the results as many people struggle with seasonal depression or apathy. Perhaps doing the lessons toward the beginning of the year or Perhaps February, the beginning of the day may change the results.

This is a pretty universal lesson applicable to most students. Because I am musician, I might incorporate music into the lesson. For example, asking students to find a song that reflects their various moods, feelings, and emotions. Also, having students listen to music and identify possible emotions or how the music may or may not reflect their own emotions. They could also create a playlist that embodies a specific emotion or mood. This allows them to communicate without initially having to talk. I also think I would add a daily journaling opportunity. I think there is value in being able write in an unfiltered way.
