Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was born in Salem Massachusetts, as many of his writings are set in this area. His ancestors were some of the first people to land here and contributed to the Salem witch trials. Hawthorne felt a guilt over this and this created a theme he later used in many of his stories, as can be seen in the Scarlet Letter.

At the beginning of his career , Hawthorne's work did not get a positive response, but as time went on his books and pieces of literature were cherished by many. Hawthorne published his last book in 1863 and passed away in 1864. However, after he passed away his wife, Sophia, worked hard to edit some of his personal notebooks so they could be published.

The passion of love is a theme in the novel. This can be seen through the relationship between the characters Hester and Dimmesdale. They have a love between each other that causes them to go to great lengths and troubles for it. This shows the true passion of these feelings and its effect on characters.

Sin is a big theme throughout the novel. Adultery is the prime example. The character Hester commits this sin and the public looks down upon her for that. This also conveys that these sins are natural and have grave consequences. Once the sin is committed, Hester must live with it.

The roses in the first chapter symbolize Hester's sin and passion. Roses are beautiful and enticing, which represents her passion, but they also have thorns and can hurt you, which represents her sin and the repercussions. This symbolises the conflicted feelings too.

Pearl symbolism Hester adultery and the fact that once the act is committed you must live with it. Pearl is the consequence of the adultery, but she is also Hesters hope. Hester does everything for Pearl and the symbolizes that even after a morally indecent act there is a chance for redemption.
