Class does not always equal happiness as with Miss Havisham she is wealthy but it is power and revenge that matter to her the most. Also with Pip when he gains his fortune he doesn't find himself as happy as when he was poor and of a lower class living with Joe.

Miss Havisham is located 'up town' whereas Pip is located in the village showing the class divide using location and setting. Also the gate that Miss Havisham has separates the classes as it is protecting her riches from society.

Joe is an example of the poorer classes in comparison to Miss Havisham and the older Pip. Unlike Pip, Joe is comfortable with his social status and doesn't wish to change it. This later on resonates with Pip that wealth and class doesn't but happiness even though he is later embarrassed by Joe wishing that he "wished Joe had been rather more genteelly brought up, and then I should have been so too." (Chapter 8).

I think that for Pip the aspiration to up his social class is because Estella points out the differences through the comments "course hands and common boots". The mixing of higher and lower classes (Estella and Pip) only makes Pip realise the differences as where he has been brought up everyone is like him so he knows no different. Yet to be made aware of it, it spurs Pip on to become a gentleman so that he is able to become the perfect companion for Estella.
