She describes this as an explanation to his lack of religious beliefs and spiritual nature. This disconnect is displayed when he absentmindedly travels with the beggars, and due to his materialistic nature, focuses on the monetary outcome instead of questioning the beggar’s identity. All around, I agree with the author’s conclusion that the Summoner’s capability of refusing donations supports his spiritual state. Moreover in the tale, the poor actions and decisions of the Summoner reveal how deficient his spiritual state actually is.
