1. Re-read the description of the Friar in the "General Prologue." What are his character traits, his motives, his methods, etc.?

Based on the information provided in the general prologue, readers can conclude that the Friar is a joyous man who all around is content with his life. He is well known by those around him and lives off of their donations.

4. Why is the Summoner referred to as a “pimp?"

The Summoner is referred to as a "pimp" because he is a ladies man. He was married to multiple women throughout his years. Due to his value for money and stealing it from others, he uses his charm on women to assist him in robbing others.

In the essay Charity Refused and Curses Uttered in Chaucer's Friar's Tale, the author describes the Summoner as a self centered man who does not feel sympathy for others and their suffering. She describes this as an explanation to his lack of religious beliefs and spiritual nature. This disconnect is displayed when he absentmindedly travels with the beggars, and due to his materialistic nature, focuses on the monetary outcome instead of questioning the beggar’s identity. All around, I agree with the author’s conclusion that the Summoner’s capability of refusing donations supports his spiritual state. Moreover in the tale, the poor actions and decisions of the Summoner reveal how deficient his spiritual state actually is. His failure to oversee the underworld’s demons’ tricks to make deals with the devil shows readers just how much control and power over charity can affect one’s spirituality.
