Dear diary, this is Joe (Marlene’s dad)

I went to pick up Marlene at the train station today, thankfully the ride home was mostly quiet. She was talking about how she made friends, I did not care much, she also said how she was gifted with being able to mimic animal calls. Once we got home, she asked if I wanted her to make the calls for me tonight, I shook my head saying, “I’ve got the real thing outside my window.”. Marlene is on break from her school now, so she has just been running around and playing with the dogs through the day.

MORRISON

It's been hard time, but I keep telling myself I would get over it. My daughter got back from school and the only thing I can see in her is my wife. My daughter on the other seems to be happy at the fact she made new friends at school. Ever since my wife died things just haven't been the same.

My daughter Marlene had showed me a bird call today. It just made me remember the time me and her used to show her mom. Every time I think about Marlene, I see little bit of my wife in her. But I have been acting distance to Marlene time’s just been hard without her mother

Dear Diary…The past few days have been so stressful and not only was it just that, but I also heard the heron calling and my daughter most definitely heard it as well. The next day I heard the heron calling again so I decided to get up and leave the house and go down to the river since that’s where I was hearing the heron. These past nights I would stay awake and wait for the heron’s call so I can follow it. It felt like it was calling for me so that’s why I wanted to follow it and I was doing it for the past 10 days. The red crested heron is now long gone, and it was an unordinary bird since it has been giving me hope.

Dear diary, I am sorry that the bird died last night. Tonight, I will make the birds noise to keep my dad happy. He would be depressed if he learned the truth about the bird. Making my dad happy is the best part of my day. I will slightly make the bird late until I don’t have to make the bird noise and make him think the bird is having a good life.

Dear diary today after hearing it again I ran to the direction the call came from rushing past trees I found my daughter instead. After my heart beated as fast I could run, I had found not what I was looking for but something of value. I told my precious if she heard it too, she said she had but had arrived from the contrast direction. After searching the area around for an extended amount of time we realized it had passed enough time for it to not be within reach. We searched even further to the area still no sign at foot but the call was still alive in my heart.

After that immense 3 hours of searching but without enough satisfaction for the search to be over we had the call to please us. On the way home I saw Marlene tired and almost asleep I felt like thanking her for what she's done but I didn’t want to disturb her from resting. When we finally arrived, I saw her get out she looked sad or repentant but I believe it was just how worn out she was. She went straight into bed while I sat thinking in living room, I could tell she couldn’t sleep either for I could hear footsteps coming from her room. At last they stopped I checked on her but she was finnally resting and I decided so shall I.

I haven’t saw the heron today. I was looking forward to it coming back. I didn’t say much to my daughter but I feel a little happier. I walked by the lake for a while. I stopped and gazed across the water. I heard a noise across the lake. I looked ahead and heard the heron. I felt a since of relief. I am not going to go look for it so it will become stressed. I smiled and began thinking of what animal would come in next.

Dear diary....

Today I went to see my father again for the holidays. He picked me up in the same small car which sucked because it was hot. He got out of the car and slowly walked towards me. He looked gloom, no smile or anything. Still, I moved towards him and went for a hug, only for him to go in for a handshake. A handshake?! It was so awkward in the car and all I could smell was Tobacoo, cheap Cade Brandy, and sweat. We barley talked and when we did it was 5 words or an insult. But still I ignored all of that and moved on with my day because I want to make my dad happy.

Its been a rough few nights, and Marlene told me that writing down my feelings helps, and it does. Goodness knows how many pages ive filled up with mindless rambling since the day she died. I just couldn’t get over it, and then we found the bird. The heron’s call was one of a beautifiul, angelic voice. I couldn’t help but go visit, to what Is he rmother reincarnate. She always loved birds, and had a bookshelf full of birdwatching books, species books, drawings, you name it. I snuck out of the house only hoping marlene couldn’t hear my footsteps, for I had to be cautious. I floated acros the river on my canoe I always kept shored, just for this occasion. I could see the birds beautiful, blue crescent feathers, which just so happened to be my wives favporite color. I ran up, and held her close. I miss you, my dear

Dear diary,

It’s me Marlene again and I just saw my father at the train station. I was trying not be weird so I went in for a hug but instead he went in for a handshake. That was kinda awkward I felt like he rejected me. Then I tried to show him my very cool bird calls which came in handy at school. He said no and made a rude comment. I felt like he was being cold towards me. He then got this bird that made really cool sounds just like the ones I could make. Except he was paying more attention to it than me his own daughter! I watched as my father slowly got more and more attached to the bird I wondered what could be so special about it. Well one day I saw my father let it go free and each night we would hear it call until one day….. we didn’t hear it anymore. I didn’t notice but I got attached to the bird to that when I didn’t hear his call that day my heart started pounding hard against my chest in doubt of what might’ve happened to the bird. I wonder if my father felt that way too. One day I went out looking for some things when suddenly… the heron. I can not believe this at all it was the heron but it was dead. My heart suddenly dropped and felt as if it had stopped beating. I knew that if my father saw this he would go back to being depressed and I didn’t want that. So I did what was best I buried it. After that when my father came looking for the bird I made bird noises. I know that doing this was the best for both. I still don’t know if my father ever found out what happened to the heron but I know that I what was best.
