Sylvia is snappy, sassy, and in general very rude. For example she thought "I'm really hating this nappy-head b*tch and her goddamn college degree" (444 Bambara). Later on we see Sylvia stepping on Sugar's foot in order to shut her up, and even Sugar her friend doesn't like Sylvia's company, "'I think' say Sugar pushing me off her feet like she never done before, cause I whip her ass in a minute" (448 Bambara).

The theme of "The Lesson" by Toni Cade Bambara is racial wealth inequality and social inequality. In the story, the narrator Sylvia, is a young black girl who is being raised in Harlem who does not realize the poor economic situation that she and those around her are facing. Miss Moore is the only educated person in the neighborhood and takes it upon herself to "educate the next generation." Not only till Miss Moore takes the kids to an F.A.O. Schwartz do the kids realize their economic situation by looking at the price tags of the toys, stating that "You know, Miss Moore, I don't think all of us here put together in a year what that sailboat costs." They realize that they live in a completely different world from white folks and its is close to impossible to increase the social and economic mobility. There is still hope though, they realize that if they educate themselves just like Miss Moore did, they can live a life without having to worry about feeding their family, and spending money together with friends, etc.

Toni Cade Bambara (1939-1995) was heavily inspired from a young age about the art of creativity through her mother. Her early interests in being a story writer were helped by the efforts of her mother. Cade had worked as an investigator for the New York State Department of Welfare which through observations of working in that job, helped fuel her later writings. Barbara had released short stories from the early 1970s up to the end of that decade until she finally published her first novel The Salt Eaters in 1980.

3 stars
I felt like the the main characters traits were very annoying at times until when a slight change happened towards the end where her character was not as unbearable as the rest of the story. ¨That there? You don't even know what it is, stupid.¨ (444 Bambara). This here is an example of just how bratty this character can be towards everyone she interacts with. Miss Moore was a good parallel to show her the good traits of the toy store.

4.5 Starts
I really enjoyed reading this story because it tackles a subject that I am really passionate about, systematic racial wealth and social inequality. "She'd been to college and said ... she should take responsibility for the young ones' education." (444 Bambara). This quote shows that the education system in America is messed up for the people who live in Harlem due to the reasons that they are poor and black, which is completely messed up. Due to this these people have to educate themselves, and in the case of this story, have people who are passionate about teaching taking it upon themselves to educate the community, instead of having a proper education system built in the community.
