Imperialism occurs when a strong nation takes control of a vulnerable nation or region and takes its economic, political, and cultural life. After the industrial revolution, this became a common practice of European nations seeking sources of materials and markets to sell manufactured products which help them expand their economies by obtaining materials which could be brought back to factories turned into manufactured products and sold.

The definition of alliance:

a union or association formed for mutual benefit, especially between countries or organizations.

The web of alliances lead to World War 1 as the Triple Alliance and Triple Entente were defensive alliances that stated if one of the three countries were attacked the other 2 countries would help the 1 country being attacked. The Triple Alliance was made up of Germany, the Austria-Hungarian Empire, and Italy but when WW1 began Italy did not join with Germany and the Austria-Hungarian Empire to fight the Triple Entente as the Triple Alliance was a defensive alliance but Germany and the Austria-Hungarian Empire took the offensive. The Triple Entente was made up of Russia, France, and the United Kingdom. Once the war started the Triple Entente would become the allies and the Triple Alliance would become the Central Powers.

Definition: nationalism is an excessive form of patriotism to once country as well as a xenophobic and/or demonized view of other countries

Nationalism is an extreme form of patriotism and loyalty to one’s country. Nationalists place the interests of their own country above the interests of other countries. Nationalism was prevalent in early 20th century Europe and was a significant cause of World War I. Most pre-war Europeans believed in the cultural, economic and military supremacy of their nation. Their attitudes and overconfidence were fueled by things like jingoistic press reporting. The pages of newspapers were often packed with nationalist rhetoric and inflammatory stories or rumors about rival nations. Nationalism could also be found in other aspects of popular culture, including literature, music and theater. Royals, politicians and diplomats did little to deflate nationalism – and some actively contributed to it with provocative remarks and rhetoric.
