Maddie, Ashley, Kelsey.

How can we take action?
While it may seem daunting to take on the redlining of districts, there are still ways to combat poverty in the classroom. As a teacher, it is absolutely vital to create a safe space where students can feel at home. For many students, especially in Title 1 schools, there are many factors that can prohibit their school performance outside of the classroom. One important task teachers can take upon themselves is to provide snacks and food resources for their students. Oftentimes, students in poverty also experience food insecurity and may be hungry in class. Being well fed and cared for can set these students up for success.

At Orangethorpe Elementary there are 17 students in the GATE program, Pacific Drive has 8, Woodcrest has 7, and then Goldenhill has 98. Each school has between 500 and 700 students enrolled. Since each school is part of the same district, they have the same requirements and process for enrolling students in the GATE program. What curriculum and materials has Goldenhill adopted that supports their students to reach their full potential?

This is compared to 88.4% enrollment in Chemistry and 85.2% enrollment in Physics. Why are Hispanic students more interested in sciences than math and what can we do to get them more interested in Algebra? We can find more ways to get HIspanic students interested, perhaps by tying it into the things that they are interested in an drawing on their existing funds of knowledge to make it more appealing.
Michael Armor
Sarah Robison

Our school of study (Taft) is a Title 1 school in Santa Ana California. We see in the graph that there is a strong correlation between free and reduced price lunch numbers and the number of disadvantaged students in this Title 1 school. The other school (Lakeview) is in a wealthy area of another city not far away. This school is a California distinguished school and have low numbers in both free and reduced price lunches and economically disadvantaged students. This leads is to believe that there is a strong correlation between free and reduced price lunches, economic disadvantage, and economical disadvantage.
Tamara Ligon
Tamara Cuevas

Also, why is the gifted and talented population so different in such a close proximity (1 mile distance)? In order to try to fix these problems, we can incorporate EL programs into our daily school activities. We need to help students practice their oral and written English skills through different strategies to prepare them to be proficient in English before high school. We can also lobby for equal opportunities and equal funding throughout the district, in order to ensure greater success during high school.
-Ashley Loera and Diana Lopez Block 8 EDEL 435
