1947 Pakistan gains independence

India fought for independence throughout WW2 because India wanted Great Britain to stop using them for their resources. Britain declared it will offer India independence in 1946. They intended to leave as soon as they could, since Britain could no longer afford to run the nation because colonizing a country put them into debt. Pakistan gained its independence from the British after 200 years on August 14, 1947. Pakistan had been ruled by the British since 1858 until its Independence Day. It was deemed the "noblest act of the British nation," by Mohandas Gandhi.

Perspective on Child Marriage

This graph from Human Rights Watch can tell us that the percentage of underage girls who must marry in Pakistan. This might seem wrong, but it is actually against the law, in 2009 the law "Child Marriage Restraint (Amendment) Act, 2009 was tabled in National Assembly to amend Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929" (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, accessed 2023). This might not seem like much, but 21% of all Pakistan's girls is around 15 million girls. Many girls are impacted by this because their lives get controlled and decided for them, no matter what future they want for themselves. Around 90% of women suffer abuse and 47% of married women also suffer abuse, in all this about 50% suffer in silence. (The Express Tribune)

Pakistani women are granted suffrage in 1947

In 1947 the bill to woman's suffrage was passed, though they were granted this, the violence and discrimination still occurred. "Courts have answered the call by women’s rights advocates throughout the country and delivered harsher punishments for violent crimes against women," Says GCI (Gender Concern International Organization). Though the courts granted this, they did not do their best to maintain order. When the Taliban came to Pakistan, they enforced strict rules and restricted the liberty of females. They violated the rights of many women including education and the government did not do anything to prevent it. Women in Pakistan are usually in places of fewer power in comparison to men. Though there has been some progress over time, this fight is not close to being over and the domestic violence continues.

Since coming to power in 1996, the Taliban were greatly focused on finishing an damaging girl's education and rights, although nothing like that happened to the men. The only education they supported for females was at Maddrassa schools, which were fully religious. The example of Malala Yusafzai, and her story of being shot for advocating on female rights is only one of the many girls who suffered the violation of rights during thsi period of time. According to an article from Lund University, "The Taliban were against modern education despite of not having any alternative system for modern education system to run the society. Keeping people away from modern education and allowing them only religious education is also responsible for limiting their capabilities and functioning." https://lup.lub.lu.se/luur/download?func=downloadFile&recordOId=3160037&fileOId=3160041

1980s and 90s, Pakistan became a huge host to refugees

Because Pakistan was located in the middle of conflictive countries such as Afghanistan, India, Kashmir and China, and was also situated next to sea, it became a pathway and home for millions of refugees to escape from wars and conflicts. Wars were often brought to pakistan because of this, and brought additional conflict to what was going on in the country itself. According to Sameena Nazir, a Pakistani woman who is part of the WILPF (Women's International League for Peace and Freedom) " Afghanistan on one side, Iran on the other, China in the north, India plus the disputed territory of Kashmir, so there is always something going on on the borders. There are three million refugees in Pakistan from the Afghan war. Pakistan has been one of the largest host countries in the world for refugees for decades"

According to History pak , "The constitution of Pakistan 1973 was enforced on 14th Aug 1973. It consists of 280 articles and 7 schedules with Objective Resolution forming the preamble of the constitution beside 20 amendments which have been made since then...The constitution 1956 and 1962 failed to provide the aspired political stability to the country. Both proved short lived and were replaced with the martial laws in the country." The constitution was changed due to discrimination based on gender and lack of female rights, thanks to this many pakistani women today enjoy freedom and equal rights.
