Hercules did not know where to look at first, so he went through different countries until he was stopped by Kyknos, son of Ares. They fought until they were stopped by a lightning bolt. Hercules continued to Illyria, where he seized the sea god Nereus. Nereus tried to transform into many different animals, but Hercules held on to him until Nereus gave him the information he needed. Hercules continued and was stopped by Antaeus, son of Poseidon, who also challenged him to a fight. Hercuels defeated him in a wrestling match after lifting him into the air, since he gained power from touching the ground. Hercules then met Busiris, another of Poseidon's sons and was captured. Hercules fights him and kills him with arrows. Hercules then starts the journey of bringing the cattle back to Greece but Hera interferes. Hera sent a gadfly to attack the cattle and the herd scattered. Hercules went around Thrace regrouping the herd. He then proceeds to blame his troubles on the river (Thrace). Strymon in Thrace filled the river with rocks making it impossible to navigate. On his way back to Mycenae with the deer hung over his shoulder when he came across Apollo and Artemis. Artemis furious that Hercules nearly killed her sacred deer.
